Tiptronic Gearbox, stuck in 3rd gear~~help!!

:( hello everyone...I have bought this FTO GR for 1 year, it runs fine. But last week, it suddenly stuck in 1st gear while I am driving. And after I restar, the tiptronic gearbox switched straight to 3rd gear with the neutral light flashing.

However, it runs ok (gear shifts properly again from 1-4) the next morning. But after 10-15 mins drives, it stuck in 3rd gear and with the neutral light flashing again. If i put it into drive the box clonks in and then drives fine. Put it in reverse and it does the same.

If I leave it for another night, it works again. but the problem will never go away.

Ive tried a few tricks offered by others like starting it in neutral etc but nothin has worked.

I have never change gear box oil before, is that the problem? (I don't know if the previous owner has done this or not) or is this the problem with the solonoid sensor and Autobox ECU?

Please send me an email if you have any idea, elise@financewise.net.au

Cheers~

Elise

I have toke my car to the transmission mechanic. They first checked my gear box oil. Surprisingly, they found that there are large amount of metal in oil! So they suppose that there must be something broke inside the transmission.
They give me two options. Recondition the transmission, however, tit may be worthless because they are not sure they can fix it or not. The second option is, instead of taking risk on recondition and money spending on extra labor cost, they suggest me to change another gear box. And they estimate the price to be around $3000.
I really don't know what shall I do, any one has any suggestion or does any one knows where can I get a cheap second hand transmission?
I live in Adelaide; does any one here from Adelaide can suggest a cheap transmission mechanic who has experienced on FTO to me?

Thank you ~cheers~

$3000 8O

Man, they are on ebay here in the UK for £250 (about $500) and they are about a day and a half to fit.

I did a write up for the FTOOC on removing the tip box and really, it isn't rocket science.

Yeah~exactly, I would rather sell it as a wrecking car rather than spending another $3000 to fix it. It is half of my purchase price already. And FTO is not worth much nowaday. I try to sell my car before the transmission broke down, most buyers offered me around $4000-$5000 only.

That's why I am trying to look for a cheap second hand transmission and find a cheap garage to fit it in for me..any one has a trip trans please contact me 0401330123
