FTO AUSTRALIA

My FTO is leaking oil, usually after a drive and i park it in the garage. Oil drips down but only a drop or 2 once in a while but im worried about the what will happen to the engine if it keeps going like this. My b.f said it was coming from the sump bolts because we could see an oil trail coming from the top, where the bolts are. How much will it cost me to fix this? is it a hard job?

hahaah good girl. No it should be an easy fix as long as it is what you have just said it is and not leaking from above that. Just need to replace the gasket, which i think you can just use a liquid gasket, which you can gte from any automotive shop.

I've never heard of a leaky sump gasket on an FTO... I dont even think it uses a gasket, from memory its a press fit.

Alternatively it could be a cam, half moon seal or rocker cover gasket leaking from the top of the motor all the way down. Can you have a look round the top of the engine & see if you can see any oil?

im the oil leak master iv had em all/. The sump is just the common point on the FTO where most of the oil drips from due to gravity (i think).Iv changed rocker cover gaskets...cam seals and crank seals the las ttwo are a bitch to get to.Lets eliminate some things....when was your last timing belt service and did the ychange any of these seals?has the rocker cover gaskets ever been changed before? and yes the oil sup plug does havea gasket/washer on it and should be changed every service.But highly unlikly to be leaking form there.I bet on it being rocker cover gaskets or rear cam seals!

If it is only a drip or two every now and then, I would say there is nothing to worry about... Just keep an eye on your oil level and top up until you really need to get it fix ..

Mine did the same ... Had it for about 2 weeks before I actually fixed it ... All it was, was the crusher washer, or whatever it is called... Was not put back on when the last oil change was done ...

Easy way to fix an oil leak on the garage floor .... Lay down some news paper... Hehehe ...

But seriously, if you don't know when the car was last serviced by the previous owner (or what was changed/replaced) I would suggest you take it to a good mechanic and have the old once over.... Or wait for Professor Aza and Ben to help you with it next DIY day ...

its the rocker cover , mines doin the same, and my mechanic said that it' just weeping at the moment and it's cool, but a a year or so down the track and i would have to replace it. since its a v6, it has 2 covers.

when its leaking from the rocker covers is it best to get the head gaskets changed ealier than later? My fto is weeping oil from the head gaskets and told that its still ok but will need replacing later on. Is this a job that should be done now to prevent any other damgage that occur if it would.

Mate leaking from the rocker cover and from the head gasket are 2 completely different things. If you have a leak from the rocker covers its a pretty easy job to do and shouldnt cost much at all. If your head gaskets are leaking you have a major problem. Its a big job and should be done immediatley. So in answer to your question..... YES. If your head gaskets are leaking get them done NOW and if your rocker cover gaskets are leaking too get them done alll at once.

Well first off theres two of them one is easy to remove the other is a little harder as you have to remove the throttle body etc. Why do you want to replace it?

about this problem, kitty's car is kind of leaking abit of oil and it seems to be dripping from the sump. i might check out her sump plug on her next oil change. Is there like a gasket for the oil sump? if there is where can i get it, i might as well change it when i do the oil change and how difficult is the job?

There doesnt seem to be any leak coming from the top of the engine where the rocker cover is. pretty much clean there, but i'll proberly check the sump and stuff first before i move to the top of the engine.

As some one else said put somenews paper under car and leave over night then when you know exactly where its dripping from follow it up and up and up till it stops. Then you will know where abouts its coming from. If its coming from the sump, drain oil, remove sump and use a silicone based liquid gasket and refit. Wait full curing time then refill with oil, clean area where leak was, with some degreaser and test drive. Then do same paper trick to see if its still leaking.

If you have access to hoist of some sort degrease the motor as much as you can underneath too then run car too normal running temp then you should be able to pinpoint leak
they can be so difficult to find sometimes

my turn now. got bad leaks at the cam seals....
labour is gona cost me.

yip but just make sure you get all the other bits done like belt pump etc while they have apart

yeah, actually was going to do just the timing belt kit and waterpump and ask the mechanic to check on my oil leak. Once they open all the covers, found cam seals leaks and so on...so its all sh*t$$$ from there.
i think its around $1800 for all parts and labour...

hell no mate should be 1200 max incl tensioner and idler and all seals and belt etc make sure you do the lot would hate to see you sorry after it all done and then tensioner fails or something but dont pay 1800 im sure someone in sydney can point you towards somewhere cheaper

actually i got the timing belt kit and water pump myself.

but all the seals from mitsu, got quoted $770+. its a sh*t list of seals, will find out what they are tomolo.

labour for everything is $660. I choose this garage is simply becos its 10min from my work place and where i live. anywhere further than that is troublesome for me. and i've asked a few mechanics in the city and most just refused to lay their hands of my car, just becos its an import and not many have the experience to do it right.
