Steering boot leaking, anyone had this? VIC

Hi everyone,
havn't posted here in ages but have had some noises in the front end of my FTO.
Took it to Pedders thinking it was suspension, it does need work on all the bushes which was expected.
The main trouble ($ wise) is the steering gear, the right hand boot is split & leaking. Anyone had experience with this? where'd they have the work done, Pedders are quoting about $615 just for that, total job is about $1225 according to them.
any thoughts welcome
Marty

Mate, IMHO thats highway robbery. I have heard a lot of guys on here rubbishing pedders. If you cant do the work yourself take it somewhere else.
I think from memory the boots are like $60 or probably even less and it shouldnt take them a full day to do it. Its more like half an hour to an hour per side so what the hell are they charging per hour?????? $300???

. Thats just for the power steering boot, sh*t if you were in qld id do it for a carton of beer
EDIT: SHOULDNT

If its leaking then that means the torn boot is exposing a blown seal on the rack - hence they are quoting to remove & reco the whole rack. Considering a reco rack is worth about $300, then there $315 in labour... not too bad considering the rack is complete c**t to get at & remove / reinstall.
Still... I dont trust Pedders either.

Depends how bad a blow the seal has.... just ask Jonowong, he managed to completely blow one out on the motorway

fluid everywhere! (no pun intended

Thanks guys, definately wasn't gonna commit to work @ Pedders, just gettin the $14check done there.
Is it worth repacing the rack completly or reconditioning it? what would a new one be?
sorry, I'm
not the most mechanically minded
Are there places that specialise in steering things like this or should I just see my regular mechanic?
cheers

As long as you go to a well known place reconditioning is just like new. They fully strip the whole thing down and fit all new seals etc. There are places that specialise in this take a look in the yellow page or someone from vic maybe able to recommend

if you're in the eastern suburbs i'd recommend getting Nandi to take a look first -
http://www.ftoaustralia.com/modules.php ... ic&t=13928
see if they come up the the same opinion as Pedders
i'd be wanting a 2nd opinion before getting pedders to do anything

no i don't think so, your best bet would be to give them a call.
see if you can get them to do an inspection on a saturday while you wait.
they're pretty helpful and should be able to come up with an option that suits you.

I had Pedders take a look at my suspension with the $14 checkup - didn't tell me anything I already didn't know & the price they wanted to fix it was ridiculous.. they wanted almost $2k for replacing bushes & struts with their proprietary crap products
Take it in to a specialist where you can supply the parts if you want to .. ... just my 2 cents
To relace the steering boots didn't cost me anything besides the parts ($30-60 each or something) they just did it while they had everything else out .. I guess there was no damage to any parts underneath cause the boots weren't totally shredded yet..
