My car smells really bad but the mechanic said the exhaust is still OK. Is it probably the oxygen sensor? I get about 450 km from a tank :?

Yeah man, i forgot say thank you for that. it worked a treat. Now i have pretty good fuel consumption and i dont nearly die when i start the car in the garage. :D

What does it smell like rotten eggs or petrol or something else. 450kms is not too bad if you have a heavy foot but getting bad if you drive like a granny. is it auto or manual

Its auto... It smells like heaps strong exhaust fumes mixed with petrol :?
I mainly just drive to school and i don't drive very hard :?

450 is a little on the low side but isnt too bad for a auto. id say keep an eye on it and if it starts getting worse then replace it.

or you can take it to a mechanic and get them to test the O2 sensor, it will only take about ten mins to do.

450 seems low for a manual. i think some guys on here were saying they were getting round the 650+ mark with a manual.

so if my garage reaks of fumes petrol fumes in the morning could be the o2 sensor?

fingers crossed i see a change when i chuck in the new O2 sensor.
im also changing the spark plug leads sparks and fuel filter hopefully it all makesa difference..

yes it COULD be, changing plugs and leads will also help. Manufacturers recommend that the O2 sensor should be replaced every 90k-120k. Also check the timing if you have a timing light.

As soon as you start being heavy footed fuel consumption goes out the window.

i can;t help being a lead foot every now and again. always need a little excitement in life.

obviously i dont take off foot to the floor every set of traffic lights i come to and redline every gear change, i'm just saying that i drive my car the way it was designed to be driven.

i'm sure everyone pushes their car every now and again,

my average driving style woulod see me shifting at about 4.5k revs and i just drive the car like any other person out on the roads.
