Hi all took my car to the mechanic tomorrow its leaking wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, he said it looks liek its comign from the crankshaft seals???he said he can get after market parts and will charge 60bux a hour labour...good guy...but he said he wont know for sure until he rips off the timing belt cover. How long would a job like this take guys (in hours)?
Also is it possible to drive your car with the timing belt cover off? Oh yea and how long on average does it take to change the rocker cover gasket?

Thanks Amacha

CAN DRIVE WITH COVER OFF BUT REALLY DO NOT RECOMEND AS OIL CAN DAMAGE BELT, ANY DEBRIS CAN FLY IN THERE AND CREATE EXPENSIVE DAMAGE! MY BELT SNAPPED AND KNOW HOW BAD CAN BE
SHOULD TAKE 5 HOURS LABOUR PLUS PARTS MAX :D

OH AND ROCKERCOVER GASKET SHOULD ONLY TAKE 10MINS IF FRONT BUT LONGER IF REAR HOWEVER WHEN DOING CAM SEALS SHOULD ALL BE DONE AT SAME TIME ANYWAY, WOULD ALSO RECOMEND CHANGING WATERPUMP CAMBELT AND REASR PLUGS IF NOT DONE ALREADY AND ALSO CHECK POWERSTEERING AND ALTERNATOR BELT WHILE THERE AS MAKES IT ALL VERY EASY TO GET TO WHILE DOING SEALS

That's not that bad a job. If your mech knows what he's doing and is a good guy...should be done bit under 5 hours.

Changing the rocker cover gaskets are easy!

is it worth having a stab at myself if it isnt the rocker cover gaskets and is coming form the timing belt area apparently yo need to get to the timing belt area which takes ages should i attempt to see where the leak is coming from? is it easy to take off the timing belt cover could i do it myself?

oh yea and when the mechanic has the rocker covers off would it take much longer to adjust the tappets?Oh yea while its off should i get the rear sparkies done and also the fuel filter dono if it was ever changed lol could that save fuel consuption?

very easy to do rocker cover gaskets but the rear one will require removal of inlet manifold which is simple enough there are threads somewhere...........
while there certainly would change plugs and fuel filter if they have not been done but make sure you use platinum or iridium ones!
Timing cover is easy to remove but you might not find a leak easily.
Would suggest steam cleaning engine before you start then run the car to temp and you will find easier to trace leak.
If you take timing covers off make sure to check belt for any wear ie runs and cracks and cam gears for chips etc

there are three parts to cover front, back and below they all use 10mm bolts just undo and pull off....
will be more difficult to do rear and bottom ones but from memory should not have to remove any other parts? its just fiddly

Yeah, you have to pull the harmoic balance pulley off to get at the lower section. That never likes coming off easy...

how long would it take for a mechanic to take of the timing belt covers to establish 100% where the leak was coming from 30 min?
