FTO's should be better..

Ok, before someone says "use the search button, that's what it's for" :) :) :)

Don't get me wrong here ok, I've had my FTO for a few years & yes..I love it!
but I'd love it a lot more if it wasn't FWD and under powered..but I do love it
As long as we keep that in mind, you won't want to flame me so much..right?

The other car I drive is more a weekend warrior, it's a turbo GT MR2. Now that is an experience..you 'have' to drive a MK2 MR2 at least once in your life..a kind of upmarket hi-tech go cart, with all the options, and enough grunt to kill yourself 3 times over, if your not careful..a very unforgiving car to drive..treat it right, or it's going to hurt you!

Ok, so I've sunk a lot of money & time into it, and done things that only an MR2 freak would appreciate..but that's how it is with MR2 guys., it's tech,tech,tech..push the limit, new ideas, new technology, new & better parts. There's 700+RWHP MR2's running on the street!..now that's scary.

My point?..ok, well it doesn't seem to be so tech minded with FTO's..no one doing something new & different, pushing ahead, making FTO's stand out from the rest...ever get tired of the 'what a nice little car' comments? it's one applealing car alright, but it's never 'nice'! it should be 'tough' or 'bad' or 'mean' maybe, but not 'nice'..and to make matters worse, there's the car, sitting there smiling at them! like only an FTO can.
Sooo any threads or write-ups on successful supercharger installs, turbo conversions, engine swaps or MS&S installs...something...anything?

www.mitsubishiclubaustralia.com i read something there about fto turbo conversion, and how its not worth it on a MIVEC cos of some reason or another...check it out if you want.

An FTO is a competitor of the Celica, its bascially seen as very similar cars. I would not consider the Celica to be beasty. Your car is probably equiv to a GSR or something. If I was to go crazy on a car it prob would be a Supra or a XR6T.

MuMan,

You made some valid points. One thing I think you've failed to consider, is perhaps the fact that people who buy FTOs aren't particularly interested in having 700+ HP channeled through their rear wheels. Perhaps people don't want a car that will "kill them 3 times over" unless they treat it right.

There are many reasons why people buy cars, and admittedly it'd be great if the FTO went a little harder in a straight line, or if you could hang the back out like a VL Turb with second hand re-treads on it...

But a lot of us like the FTO for what it is; a brilliant revvy NA V6, admittedly driving the front wheels but the steering is precise, the car is light and I personally love it with just a few mild mods.

JMO :D

i reckon the interior of a Supra is the ugliest thing i have ever seen. IMO i thing its a HOT loking car, but the interior is disastrous. Thats prob why i wouldnt spend much on a supra, or even consider buying one.

I'm not whining 8O ...ya make me sound like a 7 year old

hell no, I'm not saying FTO's should be some supercar producing big HP, I was just using that as an example..remember! I love my FTO...said that already. :)

Damn shame they didn't go RWD with it. What about the celica GT4, it's a pretty healthy, well balanced package..something along those lines. 300RWHP in a RWD FTO..it's got the looks already, very unique shape..doesn't need any of those dumb kits that make everything look like ricer specials..it's just that it promises more than it's got power wise.

Wouldn't it be nice to have 300RWHP in a nice high reving, fast spooling FTO with a cruise tune & race tune...just for when you feel like putting some kid in his bombed up silvia in his place...come on.
I get more comments on the FTO than I do the MR2! but then I've never been made a fool of in the MR2. Kind of pisses me off because I've only ever put wheels on the FTO, but spent a small fortune on the 2.
Can't do much about it being FWD but I'm sure it would respond well to some engine mods. What about a supercharged conversion, you can pickup Jap chargers as cheap as chips, a little head work and a standalone ECU..manifold might take a little thought..3" ext & int and your there. Now how would that be..instant grunt, 7500RPM (if you need it) and the only sound in the world that rivals a howling V8..all wrapped up in an FTO!
GT28/GT30 turbo conversion?..a bit more involved maybe, but why not?
SR20DET drop in swap?
Rebuild +100 NOS (just for entertainment) ;)
So how does the 6A12 stand up to performance mods? what sort of results has anyone got in n/a form?

I know what your saying but the FTO is not in the same class as an MR2. Its pointless wishing when Mitsubishi have an EVO which is quicker than all Toyotas around a track.

To put it in context and just like wishes a 4 Cylinder had as much power and RWD as a V8.

If your chasing power in an FTO dont worry about modifying it, its not a good base to start on. Do an engine swap with another turbo Mitsubishi engine.

If the FTO came with 300RWHP it would have put it in the same class as its bigger brothers the EVO and GTO. It was never designed to be in the same class.

No many cars in 1994 even had 300RWHP. Its only now where a FWD car (Mazda 3 MPS) it getting anywhere near the above mark.

i know what your saying but it's still underpowered for what it is..or should be..could be..something like that anyways. :)
What's the 6A12tt..177Kw, that's Gallant/Eterna AWD only isn't it?
That sounds like it's got possibilities.
I don't give up so easily..

you guys have the wrong end of the stick on FWD capabilities
also the driver is worth about $5,000 in mods if you cant drive spend the 5k and you'll maybe be able to keep up on the straights hehehe

have a look at where my crummy lap time is on the link below (this was on dunlop pizza-cutter street tyres on stock rims - everyone except for afew under about 1 minute had r compound tyres or at least decent width wheels)
Note the 3 mr2's :)
http://www.nolimitevents.com/e107_plugi ... .php?723.0

up the board a bit more is a 1.6 lancer with r compound tyres i never get sick of seeing small cars take it to the larger ones 8)

borep-yano is doing the AWD turbo conversion over the next 25 years with evo or galant drivetrain, we're all waiting for him to put up the blueprints. it would be easiest to get a GS FTO with the 4cyl and drop a 4G63 or 4G92 with a decent turbo, exhaust and upgraded CV shafts. theres your 300hp fto easy, instead of $30g on 6A12/ 13 turbo

It's already been pointed out above...the car simply was not designed with all of that in mind. If you wanted more power back then, you'd have bought a GTO, EVO, skyline or supra whatever...

N/a wise on the 6a12, among the active users here, look at the pres's ride (bennoz)...it's around 120kw atw with full sussy setup along with tires+brakes. There's also Aza013's ride, wioth 128kw atw and it's still missing pretty much every bolt on under the sun (at least last i know of)...the internals have been worked a bit, probably safe to say this will hit at least 140 kw atw. Then there's a couple of turbo ftos on here like Sam's, redline's and Jeff's. And there's a few in the works i believe (looks at jono).

Myself, i used to have a 116kw atw manny gpx. Threw 30kg out of the car as well. I had fun dusting off stock/light tune turbo's and older aussie v8's. Btw, if you manage to stick 700hp to the front wheels...i don't think the thing will steer or go straight.

I had the 4G63 running as FWD in my Sonata.. FWD and 4G63 are not always the best of friends... I had an EMS chip, forged internals, Garrett GT30, Coils, Bigger injectors, Hypertune intake manifold etc. etc. Got the car up to 319hp @ the front wheels ... But the drivetrain could not handle all the power...

I had the Eclipse GS-T box in there, and a custom front drive shaft and stuff.. All made with Eclipse, Sonata, and V6 magna parts.... Was stronger then stock, but got sick of turbo and FWD ...

^ I'll ignore the crack about the MR2's..no doubt Aus. spect Bathurst n/a's :)

^^any write-up's on the turbo setups these guys are running??..interested.

Been doing a bit of looking and found there was a 6A12 single turbo version released, but runs a TO4 & puts out the same as the GPX 149Kw..and not very successful.
The 6A12tt looks promising on paper as it's 177Kw stock and runs 2 miniscule turbo's, 8psi and tiny injectors..but suffers from spindly rods and bad valve guides..but, the engine orientation is reversed! like a lot of Mitsubishi engines..weird. came out in the VR-4"s.
The 6A13T will fit with a bit of effort, 200+Kw, but for my money adding more weight over the front axle is defeating the whole idea...and too much involved in a conversion.

The 4g63t looks like it should be in there in the first place. An easy 300hp without any stress, lighter, more compact and plenty of potential, probably bullet proof at that power level..and you can get them!
Just need to look into boxes and transaxle units..any info appreciated.

BTW: I came across some reliable info on faulty electrolytic capacitors fitted to the stock ECU's that leak & cause problems after 8-10years if not replaced..anyone heard anything about that?

GT30-71?
319 at the wheels or the flywheel? & what boost..
Why a Sonata??...ok, I'll stop asking questions. :o

The AWD would be one sweet conversion, but damn, what a nightmare to do!
I agree with the 4g63t it's almost perfect, but not sure about the drivetrain just yet.
I heard there's some problem with similar conversions, just not sure what it is yet.

There's a 4cyl. version of the FTO?? I didn't know that 8O

For some right up's of the turbo installs check out the Turbo FTO section under the Technical Corner.
