Because NZ doesn't have a domestic car industry, there are no import taxes or tariffs imposed on imported vehicles - which is different to us. We also (are supposed to) have tighter controls on the quality of imports which itself brings additional costs that import workshops charge back to us.

That and FTO's arent overly popular hear in NZ - especially when you can buy the likes of an EVO 4 from 10k (an plenty of other turbos on the market).

You can't import a whole vehicle for parts. Generally it has to be in the form that can't be reassembled into an entire vehicle e.g. a half-cut.

They damage so much when they cut it in half :(

its rediculous the prices over there, i went over in 2001, and there was an original condition 1983 vh commodore 6 cylinder for $11,000, yet there was an R32 worked to the sh*t sitting next to it for $4000 ono, and a bathurst MR2 for $2,500. there's also more skylines than commos and falcons combined, atleast thats what i noticed in auckland

Oh the australian term for that has so much more class...... Hoons

There are not any tighter safety or quality controls on importing to NZ as opposed to australia. Its just that there is so much beuracratic red tape in aussie. Nz use to be like aussie but the car factories could make the same vehicles for less in japan so pulled out. They will do it here i reckon in the next 5 - 10 yrs. The car manufacturers are already starting to lay of heaps of employees around the country

BULLSHIT!

NZ's Carmarket is of excellent quality, we just have a lot of seconds from other country's.

its japans car market that determines NZ's.
Also, i earn 3 times what i did in nz and cars are a lot more afoordable over here.

and shut the f**k up about kiwi, get some f**king mana and start looking after yourselves and stop worying about us, we are justas bad as you!

Except our country is run by a woman...

god is a woman

(i know this because of the 6th commandment, thy shall not commit adultery... what man you know would think of that???!!!)

A little bit harsh maybe??? and im a kiwi

But i do agree with schumie in the fact that you do have to look at the whole picture. Wages are much better over here (in oz) and overall cost of living is significantly lower (eg last electricity bill in nz for 1 month $268, first electricity bill in oz for 3 months $254, thats with same amount of ppl) than NZ, so just cause they get some cheap cars, it doesnt really matter in the whole scheme of things.

BUT PLEASE DO NOT MISTAKE THE CHEAPNESS FOR POOR QUALITY CAUSE THAT IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL. NZ and AU have extremely similar requlations on importing cars. I looked into importing my gti-r into australia from NZ and from memory the only thing i had to change was the seatbelts (not cause they were inferior just cause AU did not recognise the NZ standard).

Yeah but if he changed the tax half the country would be moaning and groaning about the mass lay offs in the car factories. Just like they did about 6 months ago, John has a lot of support on this issue and i bet a million dollars (fingers crossed behind the back) that KRUDD has no intention of changing the tax either if je is elected or any politician here for that matter

Lol you kiwis I'm not trying to argue with you lot :D

The point I was trying to make is that when DOTARS introduced SEVS in 2003, they placed a shitload of restrictions and costs on local import workshops. The workshops need to recover these costs and do so by charging their compliance fees to customers which are a lot higher than what you'll experience on the other side of the ditch when importing a similar car from Japan...

As for the 'quality' comment, that's how the government justifies SEVS in that it was supposed to improve the quality of the grey-import market which I don't reckon that it has.

Jeez...

Simon - you admit you're a kiwi and then complain about our women!?! ;)

i thought SEVS was created to allow car enthuasits to import cars that otherwise would not be available in OZ eg cars, that the manufacturers had no intention of building or importing themselves to AU. i could be wrong (not bloody likely.... nah joks)
Im not complaining about all aussie chics just the ones on the gold coast. They think there farkin paris hilton and ook like Meg (family Guy) haha. I met heaps of chics in sydney and they rock, briisy not too bad either
