I know this is old and I just came across it so I thought I would shear it.

Dear,
Mr. Greg Howarth some dick at the EPA....

I would like to bring to your attention to an experience I had the other day that (caused me distress and concern) The EPA ‘approved’ tester treated me appalling and with disrespect.

On Friday the 25.8.06 I received notification to have my car tested for noise. The same day I took my car to Daalder Exhausts in Box Hill. I have never had this test done before so I did not know what they were going to do. The mechanic set up the microphone at the back of the car. He said the car will have to be revved up to a certain level for that make and model of car. He sat in the car, turned the engine on and then proceeded to rev the engine he revved it a couple of times then he started to rev it for a longer period of time which I thought was excessive. At this time white smoke started to come from the car engine and a second mechanic came running out and said to shut the car off.

I went over to the car and asked what they were doing and whether that was meant to happen, and where the smoke had come from. An assistant pointed to the car and then said that it was in the auto transmission box.

I was very concerned and said to the mechanic that ‘I think you’ve stuffed it’. At this time they accused me of bringing a faulty car to them. The mechanic got a rag and pulled the dip stick out and wiped it and then proceeded to tell me I had filled the Auto Transmission fluid up too much. As advised by Mitcham Automatics the car has to be in neutral to get a correct reading. The car also had only just had a 10000k service 3 months ago. At this point the two mechanics quickly picked up all their equipment and disappeared into the workshop.

I did not know what to do at this point; I was extremely upset and stressed that the car might have been badly damaged and that I would have to pay money that I do not have, to get it repaired.

I rang the mechanic at Mitcham Automatics and told him what just had happened. He asked was the car in park when it was being revved that high. I had to find the guy who did the testing of the car and he revealed to me the car was in park and he also had his foot on the brake. I repeated this to my mechanic on the phone and he said the car should have not been revved that high in park. I then asked him would it have caused damage to the transmission. He said it may have and to bring it in if the car would still select drive.

I asked the mechanics at Daalder Exhausts if they’d take responsibility for what had just happened. Knowing if they had damaged the Auto Transmission it is a very costly to fix. On reflection I did not have to sign or read anything in regards to the testing of my vehicle. At this point the testers, for the second time accused me of knowing my car had a fault and purposely deceiving them. I then asked them should I drive it and they advised me not to. I was upset and stressed not knowing what to do from here and certainly no support from the Daalder Exhausts mechanics was given. As I hadn’t had this test previously done on my car I was unaware of the procedure.

At this point in time, I had no other choice but to drive the car slowly to Mitcham Automatics, due to the fact I got no help or support from Daalder Exhausts. At Mitcham Automatics I told the mechanic what had happened and he told me that NO car should have been revved that high in PARK because there is no loading on the car; but if it is done in NEUTRAL there would be loading on the engine and the right amount of oil in the auto transmission at the time of being revved also there is a valve in the car exhausts that would release the pressure if it became dangerously high.

I had to get the car tested because of what had happened at Daalder Exhausts so there was a road test and a scan check and they flushed the transmission. This cost me the some of $213.00 this was an extra cost that I did not expect when taking my car down to a recommended tester.

As this was a recommended tester by the EPA who caused this problem then walked away and left me in a state of shock, they should be held accountable and reimburse me the some of $213.00.

I have now explained the situation to you and suggest that you evaluate the professional standards of Daalder Exhausts Box Hill.

I still have to get the car tested to clear the EPA noise, who would you advise I take the car to? As you can well understand I do not have any confidence in the recommended tester.

Your’s faithfully

Yeah, sucks but there is a lesson to learn from stuff like this. Know your rights. If your not sure ask someone here or maybe older mates that may know. Someone usually will have experience and found out the hard way what their rights are. Unfortunately a recommended workshop often may not have been tested for complaince in quite some time.

On this front though, does anyone know if the EPA and transport authorities now have a specified rpm testing point for FTO. I think a couple of years ago they just used a generic 6 cylinder testing point which was quite low.

Sorry to hear this but if that's the worst that happened then i think you walked away lightly.

I had RTA Inspect my car after getting sent to the pits in my old VN Commodore and the car never made the road again !!!

Unfortunately having a nice car means you are an easy tagret and the authorities see it as easy money for them.

So what was the reply?

They basically said they could not do anything about it.

With the old exhaust it read at 109dB and maximum permitted noise level is 90dB. The stock exhaust when i got it tested the car was deemed not safe to test at high revers so with that they tested it at 4000k.

There conclusion they think the trans has been played with in Japan.

The test point for a FTO is like 6500k or 6700k something like that. The guy said it is higher then getting a GTR tested.

the test revs is set by percentage of the max, hence why the FTO test is larger than a GTR
