Hey everyone
I just found this website the other day and must say its fantastic, heaps of useful info. My names Daniel and I own a white 99 version R which I bought early this year (well actually mid last year but had importing issues). Its a relatively stock version R with the only mods being Bilstein shocks and springs with adjustable camber and ride height and a Blitz intake. Little things such as a speed limit remover, brake ducts (driving lights have been sacrificed) and a bracket for a fire extinguisher leads me to believe it was raced in Japan, which is a shame cause with only 50,000 k's on it the gearbox and engine mounts are feeling it already. But I intend on spending some money and getting it back into perfect shape cause lets be honest its hard to find a better looking car on the road than an FTO. Heres some photos below...

She's a manual. Unfortunately its had a hard life and the synchros into 3rd are wearing already, anything over 4500 rpm and it crunches into gear. I'm gonna try some synthetic gearbox oil to help the problem a bit but eventually its probably gonna need a re-build. Does anyone know if thats a common problem with manual FTO's?
Welcome

WTTC, gotta love the white
Could you tell me where the extinguisher is mounted please? Maybe a pic?
Never heard of manual gearbox issues like that being common, but I don't personally know any that have been raced.

The panel on the left side of the passenger seat leg area seems to have been replaced with a moulding allowing for a fire extinguisher or flares or something to be clipped in. Thats what my mechanic reckons anyway, for all i know its how they come standard. I'l try and get a pic up soon.

Hey don't despair, my 3rd gear synchroes are also going. But yours sound worse than mine. Mine only lightly crunches (most of the time) IF i goto 8200 in 2nd and quickish shift to third. It's only happened after i started modding the car...resulting in revs dropping slower and harder work for synchro if quickshifting. As for being raced...mine was only 56xxxkms when i got it but it also had a hard life (lots of touge runs i think). Bit of TLC later however, got the power output back to spec, just noisy tappets now haha.
Far as i know, it's not really a common problem.
The moulding is factory, not aftermarket. It was for a road flare required by all japanese cars.

Yeh the flares are required in Japan however when they come to Australia they take them out coz they are illegal to use over here.
you could always improvise and use it for something wierd like a hat holder

Stick a good LED torch in there with lithium batteries. Never know when you need a good lght. I've had to use mine more than once. An Inova X0 luxeon1 with holster is a perfect fit in there but torches have moved on to better leds...
My flares expired lol...
