hey guys, quick simple questions..

With the fto key, can i just go down to the local key cutter to have a spare made, or does the key have to be specific,. like does it need to be coded.

Somone mentioned to be once that with mitsubishi's, the key has to specially cut and coded or something.

Nope, no problem with getting it cut from your local key place.

I did have difficulties with one shop though, mainly because they couldn't find a similar Mitsubishi key blank. Just ducked over to the next shop and they did one on the spot.

i just went down to the local key dude and got mine cut, i think the special coded thingo is only for new cars.

I think code keys are for cars with factory immobilisers, I don't think FTOs ever had that as an option so you should be right

I'd really like to have a spare key cut as I only have one, and after reading this and other posts I ducked into the local key cutting place to ask for a copy of mine to be made...only to be told that my basic key has an immobiliser(or something) chip in it which he couldn't replicate. I should have just asked him to cut and try anyway...but I didn't...hence why I am asking on here.

I'm a little confused as the car has a three point immobiliser which has a seperate disarming button on the keyring...I wasn't expecting there to be anything in my plane jane key. Is it normal for there to be something in the end of the stock key and will a basic key work regardless of the fact that there is something in there?

It's a 1997 GPvR if that makes any difference to things?

I've got Three keys cut so far as I need a spare first two just didn't work third one works but makes my alarm system go crazy so I don't really no what to do lol I dunno if you can get another alarm remote made any one have any ideas?

Hmm...when you say the first two didn't work, did they open the door and go into the ignition ok, but just not start the car?

Your key may be like mine.. It has a button in it ... But it is just for the stock central locking ... Nothing else...

Dstocks may be able to confirm if the immobiliser was a factory option ... But just get him to try and cut it and see how it goes...

My key has nothing on it, no buttons at all just hard plastic all round the top. Car doesn't even seem to have central locking, although I haven't investigated yet to see if it does but just isn't working.

Yeh, I'll prob go get one cut tomorrow and see how it goes. Here's hoping that it works.

As far as I know, keys for Import cars are meant to have coding removed during compliance. That's what happened to my remote key. Maybe the people who did your car's compliance were dodgy...

If anyone is interested now or in the future, the initial posts in this thread seem to be correct.

Even though my original key had a chip in it, a basic key cut from the local key place works fine. The only problem was finding a suitable blank, but any good place should have something adequate.

If Dan22 is correct and Import cars are meant to have coding removed during compliance, then I would guess this is cut off on the ignition side, rather than in the key, hence why some key places might like to tell you that a blank key isn't going to work.

I can confirm that my 95 gpx, works with copies as I got one made and it works fine. I dont use it to open my car, I use an immobiliser for that. If i try to use it to open my door, they alarm will go off becuase the immibilier is active. I guess that as long as you dont have a aftermarket immobilier you can use a copy. I really only use my key to turn on the car.
