Hey guys

Well just after a years ownership my baby chucked a fit and blew a Radiator Pipe.

In turn this has blown a head gasket. Mechanic says that it's blowing bubbles and that theres moisture in the exhaust.

My question is how much am I going to be up for? $1000 ++

Parts availability in Victoria and prices of them?

Can anyone share my misery right now?

Andy

Yeah, your main cost is gonig to be labour with removing the two heads.
Gasket will prob only be $100 or so..

Get a compression check done first. Mechanic thought i had a similair problem before i was turbo, and it turned out to be totally unrelated..

Yeh he stated that there's 2 banks he would need to check over....

Thanks for the tip.

Your ideas on Aftermarket, Genuine, or 2nd Hand parts?

Gonna try aftermarket first.

Seriously contemplating selling her right now!!!

Dont sell her cause of a blown head gasket! You'll get nothing for it!

Dont forget the 6A12 was also in the Galant, so a head gasket wont be too much. when I get home I'll dig up the part number for you & you can call Mitsi for a price. I'd also get your mechanic to call & get a price too as he may be able to get trade discount.

If its the front gasket gone, I'd expect around $800 including a head service, if its ther rear add another $200 in labour.

youd be lucky to buy the gaskets seperatly, i had to buy the whole kit, $600 odd which includes all the oil seals, exhaust gaskets, inlet gasket... everything,

its usually the front bank that lets go

if you dont change the oil seals youll end up in more trouble, its also good to check if your valves are bent.... like in my case.

good luck my friend, give me a Pm if you need any advice.... ive been through the process twice now :)

yeah i used that, its only really a tempoary fix and its a pain in the arse to clean out of the water gallys when you do acctually fix the head gasket

$600.00 for a gasket kit seems bloody expensive!

You may be able to get them seperately HJ Galant was sold via dealerships in australia.

and then there is no guarantee you havent warped the head as well.... If it is going to cost that much, its nearly worth looking for a new engine.

always send the head away for testing and machining. I did for my I6 and it cost about 100 bucks i think.
