I would think brand new FTO's cost a lot more then $32,000.

$32,000 was probably the price when they were first imported. I'm thinking brand new would've been $50-$60k??

Not really, the price are based on Japan prices. If you live in Japan
you can grab one for $2-3k. From what I've read, old cars in Japan are expensive to maintain so people change to new cars every couple years.

If the FTO were ever sold in australia (not as grey imports) then I doubt you could buy it for the prices being sold now.

Hey, be happy with the price .. it's a nice looking car that you can drive around for the next 10-25 years and it still looks good.

Registration

Actually, the reason they depreciate so fast in Japan is because the registration cost over there is tied to the age of the car. The older the car, the dearer to register it - gets to a point where it is cheaper to buy a new car than re-register the one you have.

Glad it doesnt work this way here!
