Edit: finished the research and can use the gearbox, so will take you up on the offer once things get going.
Might bring the car round to you one weekend so you can have a listen, you might deduce it to be something else and not the gearbox at all.

She's getting towed home tomorrow & buried in the cunting garage till after my 8 day easter holiday.

looks like a magnetic sump plug, with some decoration from the gearbox on it.
