The place that is going to rebuild a gearbox for me (when I get around to it) told me that the factory gearbox is very strong, even the torque converter. Then again, it's like a manual equipped car being red lined and clutch dumped burning out the clutch faster, if you load up the torque converter on any auto equipped car many times you will cook the torque converter.

If you don't thrash the nuts off your Tip equipped FTO then your gearbox WILL handle a lot of power. In fact, estimates would put mine at over double at the flywheel with no problems other than what has been previously stated. The beauty of a 6a13tt FTO with standard turbos is that you don't have to load up the torque converter to launch (in fact, if you do you sit there in a cloud of tyre smoke, trust me, I have done that.. ony once though).

To summarise; if you have to load up the torque converter, you can and will cook the Tip faster. But they can and DO handle a sh*t load of power :) I don't drive mine much any more, but I just took it out for a blat to goto an appointment, still makes me grin every time I am on boost.

Reason for that is that the turbos give a huge hit of torque with as little as 2000 rpm.
repost.

Well I've been through two gearboxes rebuilt. First time it was the torque converter, second time it was the torque converter.

Took it to a friend the second time and he called me after removing the torque converter and he said the converter was fucked. He asked me if I did roll backs etc and I said no (i treated the gearbox nice). He spoke to his torque converter bloke who told him the converter in FTO's is weak as piss and it happens all the time.

I've also had a Falcon since new, its done way more kays (280000) its treated like sh*t, has more power and double the torque, rarely service it, stall it up and it never has gone.

Well, this clearly isn't going anywhere. If you manage to treat an FTO gearbox "well" and it breaks and you manage to treat a Ford like 5hit *cough* Ford fanboi *cough* and it doesn't break then more power to you.

What is a 'torque converter bloke'? Is it that guy that works down at the local wrecker that gets lots of sh*tty gearboxes from Japan that have done twice the km's they say it has?

My 'torque converter bloke' is one of the best auto transmission specialists in the country. PAC have sent boxes there for modification in the past. He says that the only weakness of the FTO is it's learning ability. You cannot just adjust hydraulic pressure of the gearbox to change the characteristics like you can on many other vehicles; it's the downside of the 'learning state' that the gearbox is in (or ECU if you will) as it just changes it back.

He also says that it isn't the Torque converters that cause the problems in these boxes it is usually specifically 4th 'gear' (in the 4spd tips, being the overdrive) that end up flaring; it feels sloppy and is usually mistaken for a TC problem.

Now, as I said, you have bad luck regarding gearboxes clearly. But most of us don't, and we are running far more power than you have been through your FTO box. Unluckily for you you obviously brought an FTO that had been thrashed by a previous owner.

lol, do a search on torque converters. There's a kabazillion threads on busted units. They are a weak point.

Having said that, there are quite simple means available to strengthen them.

Bahahah you f**ken noob.
a kabazillion hey??? or 6 not including this one.

but you were close :facepalm2:

I agree with FTEVO just cause YOU have had a bad experience with YOUR box doesnt mean they are weak. Me and FTEVO are booth running boost through ours FFS.

@ payaya If you went through 2 torque converters in such a short time, that makes me think that you have had another underlying issue.

Now go search for 'flashing and n'

101 results...

Flashing N could mean anytihng from sensor to the oil change needed. Hardly enough to say the gearbox is weak.

Plus we were talking about torque convertors and you said search "torque converters" lol

Hmm what that sound....methinks i hear back peddling lol

interesting discussion, ive had 2 probs with the gearbox, which is the 5spd tip, one small part in the planetary gears went and some very minor noise in 2nd and 3rd gear prob caused from the original part and small metal objects slightly chipping the teeth on the gears, had plenty of discussion with the transmission guy (engineer) and seriously reckon i might consider a career change after all the hassles etc. from all that ive learnt lol :D , it depends on a lot of factors, km's, how often trans oils/filter have been changed, how is was driven before you have the car and also the age. from all the people i have spoken to a few mitsubishi gearboxes are known to have small renowed faults that come up, but generally speaking most cars all do, but the general consensus that i can gather from speakin to many ppl in the transmission/mechanical field is that they are quite a decent and clever box (invecs). obviosly theres always exceptions no matter what the car. you ppls with 4spd boxes should not complain as parts aplenty, try and have a go sourcing 5spd parts, i had to wait 3 months and plenty of hastle to get one small part

I hear you there.
I've found ours recently to be very very abrupts with gear changes, more a sudden jolt when going up a gear.

One thing I found funny, which you would do with a manual.
With the invecs, I find you cant change down a gear, and floor it at the same time, it's almost as if they cancel out each other.
If I floor it and the car is in D it will kick down a gear or 2 and take off.
If I shift down, then shortly after apply some heavy foot, the car goes nowhere, simply acts as if I've down changed............. weird.
Would much rather a manual over 'this' invecs box to be honest.
simple autos i dont mind, much more predictable.

yes you gimp....5spd are such a minority that when we talk about tip's we aint even including you, so go climb back under the little rock you came from.
hey sweetheart that has nothing to do with it if u did read last few pages, a few ppl were whinging about the quality of the 4spd. why the anger and from such a newbie 2 ?? and my little rock is doing ok, i have been on here for a lot longer than 14 post. its funny how i havent offended u in the least until now and your resorting to name calling. this is a good forum and decent non aggressive ppl on here, please dont ruin it. it was a good discussion until your uessesary post ruined it

Question Val; why not get it tuned as it is now? Are there no decent workshops that can handle it?

no mate, didn't the front bar give it away? .. it's cause he has it tuned as a snow plow at the moment  ..
