+1 totally agree, Kms are not really the big issue as long as compression is there and you give it a major service you should have no issues

As for stand why do you need one? and can get them from supercheap etc bout $200, just sit the motor on a bench or old tyre on the ground etc

I was told for the new engine, I would have to change the timing belt, water pump etc before installing it to ensure there wouldn't be any problems. Wouldn't reconditioning it be cheaper? When you get the engine reconditioned will they do the change of those parts for you?

nope your looking at around $300 for all timing assembly parts incl waterpump/tensioners and only 30 mins to replace when out of car unlike the normal $700 labour tag when in car, will still work out much cheaoer than complete recon

Mine's a tip. Will 6A13 fit? I'm too lazy for manual. Especially when I've gotta drive through the city everyday to uni.

At least you are getting some income. I got rejected by maccas...

$700.00 is expensive. I did mine myself, and it did not take long. Got a quote from a Mitsubishi dealership and it was only 360 labour.

Well most of the cost is incurred by changing your timing belt as your belt is connected to the head, and if you wanted to take your head off you should change your timing belt.

Seriously I've done my timing belt and if I was at the stage where everything was off and I found out I head a leaky gasket it would take less than an hour I think (havent moved my inlet manifold for ages now) I get the head off. Once that is off get the head checked out and machined (Cost me 100 bucks on my other car) and put in a new gasket. Really I can't see it costing that much more if your at the timing belt change stage.

Maybe mechs like to rip people off I am unsure.

It adds up there MR C dont forget should do both heads and not as simple as just remove the head and slap it back on

I've been told that I should do the oil, filter, coolant, new timing belt & water pump, as well as do a pressure testing & servicing of the radiator where they will access the condition of the water hoses as well when changing the engine. Is that advisable? Was quoted $1100 for labour inclusive of fitting in the new engine.

check out www.completefto.com.au it has a good listing of places you can call for a FTO Spares, thought being in Perth, you might find spending more for a locally sourced 2nd hand engine engine is a better option than shipping back & forth if an unforeseen issues might occur .. cause a lot of these places are in QLD (technically under fair trading, the seller has to incur costs for all shipping related to faulty items etc - but you'd waste a lot of time fighting them for it )

Personally, I think it's far better value to buy yourself an engine crane ($150-200) and do all the work yourself before fitting the engine it's far easier to do all the things like timing belt, water pump, other belts, etc while the engine is already out of the car.. but ... at the end of the day, it all depends on how keen you are to get your hands dirty & learn more about the car you're driving..
.. if you can't be arsed, then pay the man whatever they are asking & just get your car back on the road, or take it somewhere else for another quote until you find one that will do it cheaper.
