lol firstly to clear this up, I said somewhere "I can't remember the last time I pushed the car over 6000 revs" meaning it had been a while since I'd gone on a cruise, therefore not needing to push it that far during everyday driving.

Secondly - When I do want to push it (when I go for a REAL drive on a cruise :) ) I'll happily keep it in a lower gear and at higher revs and have no problems pushing it as much as I need to. The furthest I've ever pushed it is 7000rpm. I know peak power is @ 7000rpm and I should shift at around 7500-8000 to compensate for the power lost when shifting gears but I couldn't bear to do it. And at cruises I've never needed to push it past 7000 as we're always turning and when at a straight, don't exactly all gun it to go as fast as we can.

When it comes down to it, I love going for a spirited drive but I just don't get any excitement out of it unless I'm going for a real drive. Also, if I was driving something faster, I'd give it a little bit just to feel the G force but sadly that'll never happen in my FTO, so I just drive normally most of the time ;)

You can ask people how I drive who I've been on cruises with or after this weekend

Exactly, its easy to accept something which doesnt affect you. Thats why the only people arguing against my point are full license holders.
Anyways i will have to agree to disagree cos it is circling. 8)

Hey boys and girls,

Damn this thread has gone nuts thought I may mention that a cop mate of mine has told me that the reason the have lowered the points and fines is so that more drivers will be tempted to drive up to 10km over cos the consequences aren't that bad hence more people will get book and they will make more revenue. It's all about the $$$

I'm 34 when I was younger I drove around like a wanker with a small pee pee. I ended up losing my licence cos of speeding and what not. As I got older I woke up to myself I drive at the speed limit everywhere and yes I will slow down from 100kph to 60kph before I get to the 60 sign and yes I get abused for it everyday by speeding motorists. My speed flucuates between 1-2kph either side of the limit I have driven this way for the past 6 years so anyone that says they 'accidently' went 10km over is full of sh*t or doesn't pay enough attention to their speed.

'P' platers do have a right to make their own opinion on this subject but have to realise that their opinion is not complete until they get older and experience driving from a more mature view point. You need to have lived as a young person and a mature person before you can fully appreciate the situation from both sides.

The reason 'P' platers get 'harsher' treatment is because they are less experienced and more likely to find speeding fun, sh*t I used to be one of them but you will find that the older you get the more you will see driving as a mode of transport and not as entertainment and yes I have seem older drivers that drive way worse the 'P' platers and 'P' platers that drive better the older drivers. The problem is you have too many bad young drivers that f#@k it up for the rest of you. They put these restrictions in place to try to limit the large number of incidences involving 'P' platers, sounds unfair... Welcome to life...
And finally speeding is just plain stupid it don't matter wheather your young or old and if you get done for it pull your finger out and accept responsibility for your actions.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I thought i'd speak my mind for a change.

I can't help but laugh at the fkrs who rip through traffic like maniacs, only for everyone to catch them up at the next set of lights. I've driven across Sydney alongside idiots like that, and generally they don't end that far ahead anyway.

But you know what, hands up. I don't always pay attention to speed limits, and thats largely because in Sydney, they tend to be a little bit inconsistent, and in some cases poorly rated. Some might say deliberately for revenue raising - Actually I wonder whether State Gov might slip through a reduction in speed limits with this demerits bill. There was supposed to be a revue a while back. That would = more revenue options for 0-10kph as well.

But as I'm probably one of the older members, I have a pretty limited comfort zone for exceeding what the traffic around me is doing.

I used to deny, when I was younger that I would become a slower driver, but guess what, most of the time I find myself sitting on or near to the speed limit. It's called having a conscience for consequence. You probably can't stop it from happening - unless you wrap your ride 'round a post and kill yourself

I'm in the same boat too, used to have slightly older friends telling me that I would slow down eventually, I never believed it.

I still give my car a squirt every now and then, but I don't tend to go over the speed limits (you know, how quick can I get to the speed limit sort of thing), but I think it is a bit more situational awareness that tells you that literally a few more seconds to the next set of lights won't make any difference.

And as you say, there are a lot of consequences these days to speeding. Not sure if you have the same law there, but 40 k over the limit is automatic loss of car, I think 60 is car crush (or that's what they are looking at).

I still have a very sobering feeling any time I am driving through pedestrian area, always think to myself "what would happen if a kid ran out right now?" Even at legal speeds that is a scary prospect. I think the younger people just don't think about that sort of thing (I know I didn't).

When I think about how I used to drive (and I was by no means the worst out of who I knew at the time), it is a damn miracle that I am still alive.

This is about 10 years ago now. Picture a loooong straight road on a stinking hot summers day, a line of probably 30 odd cars behind a camper van. Me at the back so I decide to pass as there is NOTHING coming. Past about 6 of them when the heat shimmer parts and there is a car coming out of a dip in the road and far too close, I am doing over 140 and shitting myself.

Lucky that someone saw what was about to happen and made a gap for me to throw the car into. It was the one instance that changed the way I drive to this day. I parked on the side of the road for an hour shaking... one hell of a sobering experience.

Now, I will not go over 120 to pass (if I can't make it in that speed, I won't do it) and cruise on the open road at 100-105. I am very vigilant on myself, because afterall, it is only a mental barrier stopping you from crossing that little white strip of paint in the middle of the road...

I drive like a f**ken maniac on the track... then once I've cooked my tyres, used 50 litres of av gas, 6 bottles of nitrous, 2 sets of brake pads & pounded a couple of STi Rexes, I then haven't the slightest inclination to bother speeding or taking on Ollie at the next set of lights.

BINGO! spot on mate... It makes you wonder how someone would feel if they ran over a small kid and killed them and it was proven that if they were doing 10kph less (which would be the speed limit) that they could have avoided hitting them... I mean is killing some little kid worth the thrill of speeding??? Problem is too many people just don't think it will happen to them...

Let me give you an example that may explain what people are trying to say...
Two people one young one old both going for the same job both have the same diploma the young person has just gotten the diploma the old person has 10 years EXPERIENCE in the same role...

The young person will be disadvantaged and the older person will probably get the job because of their experience this is not double standards this is just how life works but you still have the right to voice your opinion I just don't think that people are closed minded on this subject...

(It's quite possible that the example I just gave is horsesh!t but it makes sense to me ;) )

I finally read the entire thread through, and I agree, if there is a certain demographic that are causing more damage, then there should be harsher penalties imposed to coax them into better driving habits.

More penalties and more frequent driving test for the elderly is necessary too, because some of it is insane (straight from a motorway onramp at 40k then across 3 lanes of motorway traffic, f**king stupid)

Too many people think they own the road, until someone dies.

Speeding is f**king stupid, sometimes it is necessary I guess (like passing on the open road), but when sustained, it should be slapped down big time.

ONE OTHER THING that no one ever mentions though, and off topic... pedestrians should also be liable for fines for running across roads in dangerous situations. A month ago some idiot ran out in front of me and I clipped him with the wing mirror, after asking him if he was ok he nutted at me, so I punched him in the face

ONE MORE OTHER THING... people on the open road who drive half the rated speed of the corner in the twisties (remember, rated speeds are tested with basic spec vehicles, so are comfortable for any road legal vehicle, as in not in sh*t condition) then speed up to the open road speed limit on the straights should be nailed by fines BIG TIME! It creates impatience from other drivers and reckless passing maneuvres.

I have a 13 year old sister who I am going to teach to drive. I am going to force her to take defensive driving courses as well. She loves my car so I am going to buy her one, probably a GS as a first car.

I want her to be safe on the roads, and it won't be nice, but I want her to see what can happen with speed related accidents, so I will be showing her any and all videos of accidents and cleanup that I can find. I will take her in my own car to Ruapuna and get into a scary spin or something, if she can get the sobering experience at a young age, hopefully she will be put off driving like an idiot.

I will do the same when I have kids too. Unfortunately, my father had a heavy foot all through my childhood (never round town though), he liked to cruise ~130 kph or so on the open road. I think parents have a huge influence on the way kids drive when they finally get their L or P plates.

But you can look at it another way and say the young person will get the job because the company will pay less wages to them and in their time with the company they will gain their experience and it would have cost the company less then hiring the experienced old man.
