I got to do some work on my FTO today
Received an awesome present from my BFF Daniel, thanks heaps buddy
So today was install day.
I first had to work out what extras I needed to buy.
Off I went to AutoPro to buy red silicone joiner, black silicone 4"-3" reducer (so I could fit the pod I already have), pod cleaning kit, degeaser and some Metalcast paint/primer.
Later I worked out I will need some moar large hose clamps, tomorrow if they are open.
Put it all together only to realise that the pod was only about 20-30mm from the road. So it was now time to be inventive and customise.
I trimmed the neck of the pod and the 4" end of the reducer shorter, cut the 4" stainless pipe that joins the pod to the reducer. This brought the pod to about 50mm from the road.
Then I decided that I would need to make a bracket to raise the pipes' lower mounting plate about 30mm higher, this brought the end of the pod to equal the bottom of the bumper.
I then needed to think about the engine breather hose that connects to the pipe, I drilled a hole in the pipe and installed a brass air fitting that I already had.
I had twin horns mounted under the stock airbox, so I decided to paint these with the red metalcast and they will be installed in the empty spot left by removing the airbox.
I am only half way through this install. Waiting for cleaned pod to dry and metalcast paint to dry.
I also have other parts from dstocks that will be installed tomorrow. I may even paint my calipers with the metalcast, time permitting.

The pic showing the pod under the FTO was from the first test fit before customising.
Even with the pod in the same spot but higher, so it doesn't stick out further than the underside of the bumper, am I risking taking rain water into my engine?
It won't need a ram pipe as it is sucking cold air direct from the underside of the car.

...and yes I know my engine bay needs a clean

Just think of all the lovely Northern red dust going up inside that pod, or the water on the road :/

I know, the final install will see the pod higher up behind the bumper. But it will still be only just above the road.
I might have to install a deflector plate of some kind under the pod.
What about guys with CAI ram pipes, wouldn't they have the same issue?
Wouldn't the pod filter out the dust, it is a filter after all.

Did he have the extension bit on it? Maybe it sat abit higher behind where the air flows through the bar?

I have modified the 4" pod and reducer to sit pretty much at the end of the intake pipe so a 3" pod without the extension/reducer would be sitting in the same spot.
Remember that my pod will be higher than the test fitting in the pics, my pod will be behind the bar moar, the end of the pod will be in line with the bottom of the bumper.
I dunno if it will suck water or not, don't want to wreck my engine, don't want to dissapoint daniel either.

I'd make a deflector behind it, and somehow make it pull in air from behind the mesh?

I've got a flexy tube attached from the front bar grill running up into the whole where the airbox normally sits, and even that directs water, dirt and other road crap into the engine bay.

You might get away with having a deflector, but you still might find you'll be cleaning the pod more often

Found this pic of FTO007's install of the pipe.
His pod is still sitting very low, but he could have an under engine stone guard in place (hard to tell).
Once I install after my own modifications my pod will be at the same hight as his was.
Autopro had a 3" pod that would sit a bit higher but it was twice as long as mine. See what I can do tomorrow I guess.

I wonder if a pod with the plastic cover all around the front would be any better?

Phil, make a splitter / undertray for the front.

Get a cheap sheet of thin wood from bunnings to make up a template then make it out of alloy or fibreglass your template.

I've seen the effect of thirsty pod filters. Aqua-lock is a debilitating thing.

So I went out to my local harware this morning and they don't sell sheet metal so I thought I would try to use what I already had, a traffic sign.
I have finished installing the pipe and the pod is now just behind and up higher than the underside of the bumper.
I have made a deflector/undertray with my sign, including a mini downward wing. I am up to drilling holes and then paint it matt black.
But I am still unsure if this is going to work.
What do you think, should I continue on with what I am doing or should I modify the pipe to take the same route as the stock intake?
I don't know whether to go ahead and drill holes in the underside of my bumper?
