FTO AUSTRALIA

Compliance plates arent avalible yet. There is only one workshop in Melbourne willing to take them on at this time. I will be buying yet another FTO very shortly and this car will be used as the test vehicle to form the evidence pack for RAWS. The process will take 6 monthes or beyond, but FTO's should then be given the ok to be imported. I'm willing to answer any questions you may have.

And for all you who say That they cant be imported, I'm gettin one. Yay

Hey not sure about ausie but in NZ all fto's above the year of 1996 can be imported !!!

And actually all FTOs can be imported into NZ, irrelevant of year...

na not at all just seeing if its the same there as in nz

and no sorry mate your wrong nz transport will only let you have fto's above 96 because of the "NEW" frontal impact laws

And following on from your link, click on the 'Mitsubishi' PDF. Scroll down to where it says 'FTO', and see that you can import ALL of the DE2A or DE3A chassis, which is all models of FTO...

And the whole '1996' thing is not correct - that year is just a guideline, not a definitive cutoff. Some cars made earlier (such as the FTO) can still be imported, some made after 96 still can't be. The frontal impact standards were introduced in Japan at around that time, however some cars complied beforehand anyway...

The laws in Australia are much different and far more restrictive...

What are you going to do with it when you get it here?? The issue relates to registering the vehicle - to register it, it needs to be complianced..... no one has the rights to compliance the vehicles yet.

Unless you are going to be using it for track events - it will make a very nice ornament

Is like the 15yrs rules, as long as the dealer had brought the car before 8th of Feb, he can still brings it to Australia under the old rules. And I know some dealer just brought heaps of cars before the 8th for that purpose.

there is a way to get around it...... if you import an fto but cant regi it then buy another fto and do a complete swap of all mods etc... only if its worth it though..... or u can just change the vin plates "not saying u should though"

Well you cant get it out of the container and in the country unless it is allowed, or for track racing, in which case you need a cams license. and even then the vin numbers are etched into the firewall and even then it is illegal to forge another cars vin numbers, and i doubt any amount of mods would be worth the purchase of another fto + mods

What wannaeclipse is talking about is a common practise here to get around the import ban we have on cars that don't comply to a frontal impact standard introduced in Japan around 1996. An example is that someone will import a Evo III with a few mods, which because of the aforementioned law, cannot be registered here. It can be taken delivery of, it just can't be used legally on the streets. But you can still import them for track/drag/rally/etc use. Then you go out and buy a similar year Lancer GSR or other 4WD shell which has already been registered here, with a blown motor or similar, and basically turn your donor shell car into the Evo by transplanting all the bits. Same thing can be done with Skyline GT-Rs, etc.

More dodgy people just hack out the chassis and VIN numbers and transplant them between the cars. However this form of car conversion is just as illegal over here as I'm sure it is in Australia.

Obviously you guys have a completely different situation so that wouldn't work for you....

His FTO is going to be the donor car....so he IS getting an FTO, just not for a while.

This trick of re-shell is pretty old, & the authorities had caught onto it for a while now, you will find its harder to re-shell a car these days, as GAV had pointed out, unless u claim it as track only then you can take the delivery, but you will have all the plate cut out, including your chassis number, leaving fair bit of holes under your bonnet & through out the car. And they are not something that would be easily replaced.

But yes if you got a will theres a way. But its not very smart to disclose them on a public forum

What am I planning to do with it? Drive it. Anyone has the rights to compliance FTO's just no one has. My FTO is being imported through J Spec and complied by Ultimate Performance Imports down in Melbourne. It is the test car which they will compile the evidence pack off. My FTO will lead the way for more to be imported. Understand?

The only downside to this is that I wont have the car in my driveway untill Feb of next year, due to them having to practically rebuild the car to evaluate it, and therefore make it comply to the ADR's.

The upside is that it doesnt really matter. I cant even get my L's for another 2 monthes.
