I used Mintex 1166 pads with my standard rotors on my VR-4 for 3 years, and never had a problem with warped disks. That included a couple of track days as well.
I think it depends on how good a condition your disks are in to start with. Also machining them can shorten the life considerably...

DBA slotted drilled can crack easily... thats from experience.
i have RDA slotted, and they are really good. no warping what so ever.

And I heard DBA rotors warp easy...
Should I bother changing calipers? Is this a difficult (read expensive) task?
I've used DBA slotted front rotors for years, with pads like Mintex M1155, M1144, Pagid RS4, RS4-2. Motorkhana training and comps every 2-3 weeks for a couple of years now, plus circuit stuff too.
Mucho brake abuse!!!
As long as you are disciplined about your cooldown laps, they are fine.
I have some very minor cracking appearing in the middle of the current set of front discs, but with the massive temps they reached doing loads of circuit laps one morning, it's not surprising. This set has been on the car for about 18 months, so there isn't a vast amount of material left.
So, I'd definitely be happy buying more slotted front DBA discs. Think I'll need to very soon as well!

I've seen mechanics take brakes off etc.
It seems easy as. Basically take your wheel off and you can more or less figure out how it comes off...

take wheel off
undo the bolts off the calipers from the mounts
take caliper and pads off
then u should be able to put on the new rotor
then put everything back on.

Don't u have to clamp the brake lines? cos otherwise your going to get brake fluid everywhere?

Well another tip would be if you can't take the disc off after you took the caliper off, then gently use a mallet to take it out, just the hit the top & the bottom section of the disc & not all the way around it

u dont actually take the caliper off the hose, u just leave it connected.
You take off the caliper off the mount
