so it does not make the noise when the car is stationary and you rev the motor ?


If the precedding statement is true, then i suggest you remove your wheels and check for any signs of

1. damaged to the plastic guard liners in the wheel arches, could be flicking against the tire as you accelerate. ( this would be my pick if it sounds like the baseball card in bike spokes)

2. check around your suspension brake calipers, disks, and brake lines for possible foriegn object that could have caught up and be catching on the rim or tire or drive shafts when they are rotating.

3. check the rubber boots on your drive shafts to make sure that one of the steel bands that hold them in position havent broken or come loose and is clicking on anything as it rotates. At the same time look for any signs of greese being sprayed from the rubber boots, this is a tell tale sign your constant velocity joints are on there way out.

4. check to make sure that there isnt a pebble or nail stuck in your tires, that could also be making the noise as it rotates.

try these and let us know how you go

mine has this problem a tthe moment... in a split second decision to test my FTO's 4WD skills (not quite just a rtough road) it bottomed on a rock and started making a chainsaw noise sounding as everyone has described.

its the starter motor not disengageing ie.

when u staret the car the starter motor revs to about 300rpm then disengages when the engine runs. if it doesnt disengage it runs at the engine rpm and sounds like a chainsaw... horrible noise

and now ive sprung an oil leak just for good measure.... ahhh the joys of owening a car.

I have this exact problem too. It's only just noticeable but damn annoying to me. I mentioned to my mechanic and he couldn't even hear it (which I find pretty typical of mechanics). I'm almost tempted to move my 100k service forward 40k just to see if that makes a difference.
It's definitely not my inner guards or tyres. It wouldn't be my boots as they are brand new and I've seen them, they ain't lose at all. It's not the sound of a stone. It's exactly as described, like a fan lightly hitting something. All my belts are good so I just don't know.

I doubt it would be the starter motor. If the starter motor doesnt disengage after cranking the engine, all the teeth on your flywheel would be stripped pretty quickly and you wouldnt be able to start it again.

Will do, I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

Noise tappets/lifters perhaps? I know mine are starting to sound simmilar to what has been described here.

I'll ask my mechanic about this next service.

It seems all of you with this problem have aftermarket wheels.


I had the same noise for a little while too (after getting new 17"s).......all I did to remove said noise was tighten my wheel nuts.

Give it a shot!


Edit: This would explain why the noise only occurs during movement.


Oh and off-roading/ heavy dirt roading = unhealthy for FTO's.......cost me my transmission!

I bought the car with stockies and the sound has been there all along.

I recently had my battery replaced and I got the guy who did that to have a listen to the ticking, he said it was most likely my fuel pump/fuel injectors? Fuel something anyway..

why dont you record it and email me it, ill post it for everyone th hear, mechanics will say anything to get your dcar i nthe shop, and there is no use paying for him to try the wrong things.
the easiest way to record i guess would be to use a mobile phone, most have voice recorders and can be easily transfered to a pc.
also while recording and hit the gas and rev it slowly

i also experience the problem of the sound coming from the engine bay, although i am not sure if its the tappets or not...

but i would also know if there is another cause to this problem...

also someone noted previously about the heat shield on the exhaust..where abouts is this?

Id hate to dig the grave but i have the same problem. Did anyone ever work this out..? Cheers guys.
