Sounds to me like a bearing isn't rotating freely inside the bearing assembly. Hence the scraping/whirring noise. If possible, pull a front hub off another car and fit it to yours (with consent of course) and see if that fixes it.
Not sure how a caliper could cause this issue, if it was sticking the brakes on then the car would pull one way and you'd be noticing heaps of uneven pad wear.
I'll have an FTO one day... i swear!

Cool, consensus says bearing which is what I was hoping for.
It also means I paid some schmuck years ago for sitting around.

Wanna pay me to sit around instead?
Serious question though, do the FTO's have replacement hubs available that can be bolted straight in, or do you have to press the bearings out and back in? If it's the former, I'd be more than happy to help swap the new one in for you

Cool. Means you also have spare wheel studs should one ever be stripped.

not necessarily lawso, but any tyre shop really. Have seen and replaced many stripped wheel studs on trucks at work. Having a complete hub assembly available means when you replace the original, you can keep the old studs as spares should the need arise.

The difference is that Lawso strips it by hand, tyre shops strip it with a rattle gun.
