Buggered bearings found...

The lower shaft is the Primary, bearings both ends are stuffed.



Close up of the left hand one, there is no other way to describe it, it's farked! I'll try and take a pic of damage once pressed out.


If your a lazy arse, can't be arsed walking to get a 1/2" ratchet, socket & extensioin and try and use 3/8th tooling to undo the engine mounts, this is what'll happen if you put enough power behind it I thought I'd try to see if it shifted it, I spun the head off the extension....

I've done that before lol

This is what had become of my input shaft primary bearing (cracked in in half in the vice to see the damage.)

I take back what I said about my bearing, it's not even in the same league as yours, that one really is farked!
What the hell caused that damage , it looks like it's either exploded or corroded.

Yeah I reckon it was corrosion. It was a second hand box, that I think had been sitting around unused for a while. Plus there's me punching 300hp through it

On and off throughout the weekend, in between a couple of few beers I managed to achieve the following.......

- Stripped and cleaned the drive shafts, re-greased, re-assembled and covered the ends in plastic bags ready for install.
- Stripped and cleaned the gear box cases, gear selectors etc and oiled / greased ready for put together (bearing shopping tomorrow)
- Stripped and cleaned the started motor, checked brushes etc.
- Re-greased front wheel bearings.

Well the bearing change has been done and almost re-assembled but stalled as my Hylomar is old and I'm not wanting to trust it.
So off to buy more.

Out of interest anyone else ever used Hylomar?
It's thebest stuff I've ever used and the only stuff that really worked on BMC cars aka minis.

Hylomar! Haha, I used to use that as gasket goo on minis as well!

I use Threebond Grey gasket sealer on these boxes.

How did you go sourcing the engine end bearing for the secondary shaft? They're made specifically by Koyo for Mitsubishi, only available from Mitsi And its the biggest c@#t ot get out too, I usually grind a slot in the shell too pop it out, then use a cold chisel to move the inner shell off the shaft enough to to wrap the cows c@#t on & press it off.

This is a five beer job, that's putting a gear box back in I mean. (fifth in hand now)
So useing only jacks and no lifter / cherry picker and a few choice words it all came together. I couldn't use a block and tackle from the rafters, that's the problem with a lined gib ceiling there's no god dam rafters!
Good news however... O she who must be obeyed heard me mumblings and questioned why I didn't have a lifter / cherry picker? that's an approval if I've ever heard one to go tool shopping, wo hoo!



Lazy arse as you can see........ I haven't cleaned the hylomar up yet, but hey one job lead me onto others and in this case whilst I was there I threw a new slave cylinder clutch kit at it.


Only carnage was one air con pipe, bent it (dump prick I should've known better) split. DOH!


One job always leads onto others, I just can't help myself but clean...


Now let it all settle down, re-torque everthing and check for leaks. It's already completed one heat cycle, no leaks so far, Hylomar really is the sealant from the gods!

The secondary shaft bearing (engine end) was okay.
The only one that was really buggered was the primary (engine end) & a poof tenth play on the secondary shaft (case end)

As for getting that one out..... umm dunno I would've crossed that bridge when I'd came to it, but to be honest Ben I have available to me a hanger full of aviation tooling and mates who work in their if needed however I'm such an independant prick I would have given it ago and tried to build something like they've got in the manual, aka struggle with it. (besides me mates would charge me, the currency is beer, farked if I give that up too easily)

Gear box is as sweet as one would expect, nice and tight, quiet as and wey hey hey no leaks!

So onto the next jobbie...... Getting rid of the diesel sound when cold, that'd be them lifters me thinks.

In hand or ordered and on route...
x2 Rocker cover gaskets
x6 spark plug gaskets
x24 zero tick lifters
x6 NGK platinum plugs

I had a gut feeling, being a neglected ex Gen Y car and all......
So I pulled the front rocker cover off tonight to take a quick look. My gut feeling? It'd be as sh*tty as all hell under it, my gut feeling was right!
Lack of oil changes, coupled with cooking the engine aka running it too hot and finally some lazy arse at some stage instead of replacing the gaskets with new ones just silicone up the hard old ones has made this a shite of a mission to clean up.

I couldn't help myself so I pulled a lifter out to see if I could make it move, it moved but only in the vice. (they'll make 24 great tools for other we jobs)

Where are you getting your rocker cover gaskets from?

I bought them through Supercheap the other day "ACL" out of Aussie (distributed) but the packaging says made in Japan.

Yeah I know, you wanna see the bottom of me parts washer bin now
After the gear box work was all done I cleaned up everything as normal, including me parts washing container.
After a quick few mins of cleaning the rocker cover (the pic above was taken after I'd been washing it for a few mins) there's at least 5mm of crud on the bottom already.
