I spent $2k on product/paint/tools, I worked 12 hours every day for 20 days straight, it was fun but also very stressfull (I didn't know how it was going to turn out, I could have destroyed by beloved FTO).
Moral: I don't know if I would do it again and @ $2k I wouldn't earn any money for my time, so the short answer is NO!

Give it a go yourself, worst that can happen is you stuff it up and then pay someone to do it.
Start with something of less value, like a panel from the wreckers (they would probably give you a damaged one for free)
There is plenty of threads and books about the subject.
