it depends i know Storm hawk wanted to fix the problems so now you have a list of known ones you can atleast get a mechanic to check it out.
Obviously the price is low to start with as he never paid much for it

I have uni fees that need paying so $30,000+ for a car is not happening.

Something that is tidy...
I meant don't get an fto AT ALL haha....
So if all fails are celicas any good? they look nice so do some Lancers but i think my partner would diss own me if i bought a Lancer.

Lol, you are looking at the same options I did.

Celica: I personally like the post 96 models with the new front (instead of the peek-a-boo headlights) and you can pick up a ZR at the same price of a SX if you look around. Though SX ain't that bad either. End of the day, its a Toyota, and they have a tuned Camry engine. Servicing would be easy and cheap, same with finding parts for it, (cheap and easy).
If the previous owner has service logs/receipts which proves he took care of the car and maintained it, then that's a good buy.
Do keep in mind though, these 96+ celicas looked sporty, but isn't that zippy as you would expect from a sports car. (Preludes and Integras are more zippy than the Celica imo).
P.S: I looked at some Soarers as well. If you really want to beat your bf

haha only just realized that the car was passed on to someone who is now selling it.
So all of the issues may have been sorted.
I rekon the alternator has been fixed but the chances of the roof rust....well I'd assume that is still there and thats what's going to cost the most to get repaired!
Just contact him through ebay and paste the following...
rusts spots on the roof.
dead alternator
hasnt been started in about 2 months, (thanks family)
and dammaged left rear suspension.
Ask if all the above has been sorted haha.
Also, it says in the thread topao posted that he purchased the car for $700......
So keep that in mind too haha

Hang on a sec. In the original thread, those things were an issue, but id say they have been fixed. I know John and if he is the one selling it, itll be OK. He says that he has welded up the rust in the roof and repaired (last post in original thread) and I know he will have registered it. Im not saying you should definitely get it, but if you are interested and if he is selling it, I have his contact details if you want to have a chat with him. I know he was looking at selling a couple of his FTO's (he had 4). He is an honest bloke and would not have flogged it since he has had it (he's older than me and thats saying something).

Thanks

I'd never purchase a 15year old car without having someone with me who knows their stuff. So If I were you I'd probably ask a friend or family member (who knows what to look out for) to go down with you.
Roof rust
noisy tappets (or any weird noise)
check if side mirrors work (fold in and out)
Oil leaks (check under the car)
Make sure you take a GOOD LOOK at the roof for any rust spots. If not, question the seller if he has had any roof rust etc etc.
Things you're most likely going to have to replace when trying to get a road worthy are brake pads and windscreen. Also any brake line leaks etc etc (most likely will be leaking somewhere there).
In all honesty, if you have the extra money...stay away from this car and get something newer haha.
i know this might sound dumb....but what's a tappet?

Everyone here cant swallow their pride but my gf and i both own fto's and sh*t breaks on it every other week. The only reason why it isnt sold yet is because i can fix pretty much everything that goes wrong with it so theres only the cost of parts.
If you were smart and selling an fto with roof rust youd just sand over it and do a dodge job. Your never gonna know.
Tbh all the money that ive wasted fixing problems id have already myself another car.

My partner and i had he same problem with a BMW we bought. Every other week there was something wrong and to get it fixed wasn't cheap( some mechanics are a rip) I don't want to go through that problem ever again! Thanks for the heads up. I'm in no rush to buy to will do some research and see what's good etc. From my experience i will NEVER buy another bemmer again. So hearing it from an FTO owner really helps.
Thanks.

Weve just been through this in another thread. Please can we avoid going there again. SilverGPX has had a really bad run and that has been made obvious before and he has very strong opinions about this. This is not the case with most members. There is always a chance with a car this age that you will get one that has problems irrespective of what you look for. This is the case for any model car. pinkleptir, dont give up just yet. Do your research and come to the conclusion yourself.

Tin can the cars then if they're that much of an issue.
Who's more stupid, the person looking to buy the car asking on a forum about if it's any good, and getting some sound advice.
Or
The moron who keeps fixing a broken couple and keeps whining about it on a forum with delusions about "I can fix it all"... If you can fix it all, then why complain? And if it shouldn't break, then why keep it?
Sorry OP, welcome to FTO Australia

, good luck with your find.
They are not bad cars, but like ALL cars doesn't mean the previous owners treated them well.
Look hard, do your research/ homework and you'll be sweet.
There is a thread in the newbies section for all things to look out for with these cars, it's fairly comprehensive, I and others would recomend having it professionally inspected to give you a complete run down. And don't settle for an eye from a distance or pictures of the car before you purchase.
I've bought cars off eBay and been lucky, just keep in mind these cars are getting on in age, are classed as a sports car which means they have most likely been 'driven' and ultimately did come from Japan where some things are done in an unconventional way to improve a sale.
As said, good luck.
