depends how much the person wants to spend, it would take over 10 years for an exhaust to rust out under normal operating temps so by then it will be 27 years old and it wont really matter unless fto's becaome a collectors item which even then it would be stock ones.

Unless you live here in Scotland, in which case a month and a half is considered old for a mild steel zorst

somehow for me stainless ended up being cheaper than mild steel :s

I'm a big fan of cannons but only the quality type from name brands.

I think it has been stated that its not only in the muffler itself that has an influence on the backpressure. All the components of the exhaust system work together. Also tuning has a lot to do with the certain backpressure for an exhaust setup (correct me if wrong =).

I ran a stainless catback with headers, resonator delete and cannon and it was ridiculous loud.

Grown out of that type now and have moved onto to the more sedate look and quiet sounds!

Sames! I find that I use the quiet mode a lot more these days to blend in with the other quiet cars.

i dont know much all about (anything) exhausts, i was just going on what ive heard, stainless will outlast the life of the car... mild is susceptible to rust... but whats the lifetime and does it match up against the price of stainless? ie, '2' years down the track, if my mild steel exhaust system rusted and cost the same as the one id got 2 years ago, would that be the same price as stainless

I reckon a good reason to get stainless is if you plan on keeping the car for as long as you can... Or if you plan to re-use it, ie transfer it to another car.

Me too, and there a multitude of products from muffer putty to that gooey wrap stuff that I've used to patch leaky exhausts.

Really depends on where you live. If you live near the beach and have to drive across a semi submerged sald water causeway every day, then yes... I'd go for stainless. If you live in the UK & have to put up with salted roads (sucked in) then yes, I'd go stainless. If you plan on keeping your FTO for another 15 years, then yes, I'd go stainless.

If you answered no to all of the above, mild steel will be fine. It'll outlast your ownership of the car.

It all depends on the driver, i prefer stainless because of the benefits (regardless of whether they are relevant or will become relevant or not) and because i can afford it, rather than thinking of the price increase over a mild steel counterpart.
At the end of the day, if you can/want to spend the dosh then by all means go nuts on stainless but if you prefer to save your cash or cant personally justify spending the extra $$ on stainless, theres nothing wrong with mild steel.
I would also like to point out that because you can see mine poking out from under the car a bit from a good 50 meters away i like mine to be a bit shinier than regular metal
