I got a 94 gpx. No rust that I can see). Even bent corner of the panel above front wheel on the corner towards hood (by accident) and it seemed fine no signs of rust or weakness

Nah, you wont get rust there. The roof is the main culprit (10 cm behind front window and 10cm infront of rear window)

Not in the middle of the roof. The lines of rust you get on the roof at the front and back are where glue has been placed between the subframe (which runs along these lines) and the roof. The sunroof version has an extra subframe welded into the roof around where the sunroof goes. There is glue around this as well

I think FTO's made from 98 are really the ones that have the better glue or whatever since my fto is dated 8/97 and has a sunroof and had rust...

Then again I haven't seen, or heard of, a 98+ fto that has a sunroof with rust..

Late 97 onwards have different glue = no rust

I think they changed the glue at 01/09/1997 and yours manufactured on 31/08/1997 :cheeky:

Is it possible to remove the subframe and drop in a huge-ass sunroof which cover almost the whole roof?

Possible, but hardly safe.

More or less, that's what they did in Jurassic park

If you do this mod, you won't be protected against a T-Rex.

Don't know if this has been covered or not, but I read that the rust was due to using a bad/wrong type of bond or glue and that after 96ish Mitsubishi realized their mistake and used better stuff so no more rust issues

I thought I was safe, but...nope. Waxed my car on the weekend & I noticed 3 small [2-3mm] raised bumps just forward of the rear screen.

I was thinking of just getting the roof/pillars sanded back to bare metal & sprayed black, but if the problem is on the inside that will only be a temporary fix.

Any idea on what the procedure/cost is to just make this go away? I prefer to do things properly so fire away *cringes*

Edit: '95 GR just for reference

I got huge holes and rust bumps cut out and got new metal welded in for $800 (in both sections, front & rear).

This sounds like it does the job "well enough" to keep the rust away...

Stef, how was the repaint, was it just for the spots of new metal or was it the whole roof? up to quarter panels?
