Been caught out twice though in my old 1989 mazda 121 lol, i had to get a bunch of schoolkids walking to school to push me accross an intersection, they pushed me out into the intersection then let me stop in the middle, i was like "AHHH KEEP PUSHING!!" just got into a driveway intime. I find situations like that fun and thrilling, people get so embarrased!

wait back up

we have a fuel light in the fto?

i remember this time (not gonna say if it was me) ******* and about another 4 guys got this harda*s teachers little hatchback and put it between two tree's (nose and rear end) with probably about 4cm room if that at each end (was a pretty good fit considering) woulda been fun to watch him get out of it, the thought if it reminds me of a common sight in melbourne.......... the 30 point turn haha

i hate the 30 point turn
the people that do it always do it in the worse possible places
i love driving up and seeing some car in some stupid situation and you just think how the f**k did you get yourself into that?

Manual fanbois reunite huh? The 4 speed tips are pretty strong; you *will* get more k's out of a tank with the 5 speed tip, but it will be minimal. As said, the 4 speed tips are far more numerous and both Simon (I8AFRE) and myself having been running turbo motors through 4 speed tips for years.

THIS. As long as you service it periodically and use good brand stuff and it has been looked after before you brought it... you will be sweet. I would never own a manual again after driving the tip and i used to hate fkn auto's.

And tbqh this is the same whether you get a manual or an auto. In fact, badly driven manuals will have far more regularly costly work needed (clutches) than autos.

There is a reason that the 4 speed tips are so good, they are Porsche designed iirc.

Not so true. Yes if your comparing a badly driven to manual to a well driven auto. But comparing apples to apples, if you compare a badly driven auto to a badly driven manual. The auto will ALWAYS be far more expensive.

Ok I yield... I was merely hinting that I would have destroyed many standard clutches with my current setup whereas my tip is still hanging in there.

So what you are saying is you can't drive a manual

BAHAHA

I know Turtles that can drive manuals, and do burnouts for that matter!

I'd honestly be interested to know if there was a huge difference or not between the 4 and 5 spd autos meanwhile.

gauges back plates????

if the facelift model is good enough consition and the sell can move a little on the price then it will b sold even if it is a 5 spd. i think that even if 5spds are hard to get parts for and work on, more mechanics will ahve worked on this tranny and more spares will b aviliable by the time this 1 fuks up..... min of 5 years yeah? teated nice bt lots of kms..... chick driver

brent88 wrote:manuals arnt always faster even though some people might think this.

manuals lose less power from transmission estimated at 5% (loose 15%through fwd, 20%rwd and 25+ through 4wd, did read this on a reputable site but dont know where it is) obiously averages of generally good condition exapmples maybe 5-10 year old. but when you drop the clutch everything is jolted into place and the 'shock factor' comes in to play and ussualy results in wheelspin obiously reducing the revs will stop this but then your sacrifincing takeoff speed)

auto's lose 5% avg power over a manual but with the fto's you still have the availibility to shift whenever you want (i ussualy shift at between 7 and 7,800, i love it when the second cam takes over pretty sure its higher rpm then the best shift point. and with an auto you can 'preload the transmission' by holding your foot on the brake revving the car (i use about 3,000rpm) and letting go and slamming the accelerator pedal down at the same time. can take off at higher revs and ussualy will compensate for the power loss in even a quater mile where an fto should at least reach 160kmph stock.

i know im probably gonna get blasted (mainly by people that go by what 'their fully sick mate' told them so ill try and find a few references i guess) btw im pretty sure the best drag cars in the world use automatic transmissions.

also i think (correct me if im wrong) but the 5spd tip has lower gearing that could make better use of the gears making it a closer ratio gearbox....? its supposed to be not as bad as somepeople think but obiously more than a few seconds preloading will b bad (i do it at some giveway signs if traffic is heavy never had problems with 5 years of driving auto's, have had manuals though)

Nearly all real drag racing cars are automatic or slap stick. It is just way more consistent. If you are bracket racing it is easier to load up the TC and launch then try to dump the clutch perfectly.

Yes in theory the stick shift will put more power to the ground but if you can't drive more power won't help you that much. Also in a 1/4 track you might be faster if you have an auto that is still ripping along in third as you hit the lights vs. having to shift to 4th gear in a manual.

So there are lots of things to consider beside just the transmission. Most drag cars are highly modded and have plenty of power regardless of transmission. A solid auto with a good torque converter and a shift kit will be consistent.(FROM A 350Z FORUM)
In the FTO's case a manual is quicker than an Auto.

Gimme a manual anyday. The torque converter is piss weak in the FTO. I've been through two rebuilds with the TIP and it's taken car of.

+2 manual

auto puts me to sleep when i drive it, manual atleast keeps me interested

but then again i dont drive in stop/start traffic so its no inconvenience driving manual for me

Ok phanbois, I hear there is a new Twilight movie coming out soon, perhaps you two should go watch it together :pr: :pl:
:supergay:

The TC is only a problem in a badly driven and badly maintained car. Come on, did you miss the posts above? The 4 speed tips are proven pieces of kit. I prefer my piece of Porsche designed engineering over the standard FTO 5 speed any day. I would have shattered a manual by now with the abuse my car has taken :thebird:

I am pretty nice on my auto, and also seen first hand how the converter can rip apart. So gimme a manual any day! :D

Ok Edward!

j/k, each to their own, I just take exception to people that blatantly mislead others about the venerable 4 speed tips because they really are a great and reliable unit. Granted my one has done ~85 k's.

Perhaps we can agree to disagree then, the 4 speed tips are great if maintained or aren't high k units. When I say 'maintained' I actually mean full pan off services, not just the 'trans flush that misses half of the fluid' jobs :)

Well, maybe the work wasnt done correctly or used inferior parts, I dont know.

HOWEVER, mine is turbo and let's just say, it gets hammered......hard......all the time and it has not missed a beat.
