if you're looking for cheap leds, check out Oatley Electronics at
http://www.oatleyelectronics.com - they're based in Sydney (cheap postage) and they're damn cheap, especially for the bright leds, and rare coloured leds.

ruchi wrote:Robert from Ultraleds was very helpful. He sent out a range of LEDs for me to test, but I have had varied results.
Most of the LEDs work fine in the center console / dash area, but the biggest issue is behind the dials. This partly seems to be a design issue with the FTO and partly with the LEDs.
I emailed Robert 2 days ago asking for some additional information on the LEDs to get this sorted faster.
The short answer is, that if you go for EL dials, then these LEDs would be a great compliment for the other equipment, but if you also want to do the dials, we've still got a little more homework to do.
So ruchi, u done your car center dash & rest? love 2 c them at the next meeting. Any chance of doing a group installation??

Rucci,
Did the LEDs you got come in the plastic bases (with in line resistors) to fit straight into the FTO lamp holders or did you get just bare LEDs?
what size are your actual leds? 3mm 5mm?

hey RUCHI (got it right that time... sorry about that, it's what happens when I type without thinking - damn my typing lessons in highschool... I knew touch typing would come back to haunt me) I'm one of those that "autocorrect" on word processors was invented for... always typing TEH and such I should just pay more attention
I get what you're doing now... makes sence... figuring a plug n play replacement for the current lamps. How much of an issue is the light conducting plastic inside the dash? I havent' peeled the dash appart yet (waiting till I have some spare time on my hands) it sounds like it might possibly be easier to wire in some independent LEDs and fit them for better dispersement, rather than trying to make them act like a globe, which they're not. The up side is that LEDs have such a long life that hard wiring them isn't going to become a regular pain to keep replacing. I'm just thinking that if it's placement next to the conducting plastic that's the issue, I might want to look at sourcing some SMD LEDs and just hard wire the whole thing.
