I find that Melbourne is well structured in how its been segmented n where the centre of the city is... its literally the centre of the city

career: Melb
family: Brissy
nightlife: i prefer melb (i just find theres more variety)
food (both going out n grocery): Melb
climate: Brissy-- it seems more stable
affordability: i think once you get used to it, Melb has a lot to offer

I live in the S/E suburbs of Melbourne and the little unit next to my house is rented out for $580 a week...

$340 for a 3 bdr dbl garage place 30 mins from brissy, 30mins from gold coast

FTEvolution, forgive my ignorance but what do you refer to as "EA"?

Unlike others (you know who you are), I'll only comment on what I actually KNOW about.

The Sydney job market is rather tight at the moment, and will continue to be so over most industries for a while to come. I have been told that these circumstances are worst in Sydney (which makes sense, it's the base of Financial Services in Aus, hence would be the first to get hit) but I'm sure it will spread outwards over time.

However, if you're planning quite far ahead, like doing your 3-5 year plan, then this should be less of a problem because I don't think we're in this for THAT long.

As far as climate goes, having lived in Sydney and Melbourne I find the former more moderate, the latter more extreme. Bennoz quite rightly summed up Melbourne as delivering 'four seasons in a day'.

For more info, seek out www.bom.gov.au which will give you average temperatures for all major Australian cities.

At the end of the day, you should remember that everyone has their own agenda to push, and those that yell the loudest aren't necessarily the ones you should be listening to. Take your time, go with your instinct and you'll love wherever you end up.

An EA is an Executive Assistant, little higher up the chain than a Personal Assistant

My plan is around the 2 year mark minimum, I have a damn good job at the moment and want to extract as much experience as I can before the big move.

I really am guaging peoples comments on different parts of Au, there is a chance, albeit VERY slim, that we may end up in Jakarta. Heat isn't going to bother me too much in Au.

At this point, our preference is Melbourne as she has a lot of friends there (she studies a couple years there). But, since I am sick of 4 season days here, I think the Gold Coast may be the go. Really depends on job markets then, and if we can get jobs that will lend a decent lifestyle.

Depending on the job market, and if there is a demand wherever we decide to go, we may even open a restaurant instead of working for others. THis has been a dream of ours for a while, but probably will not come to fruition with this economic uncertainty.

I have also been researching other possibilities in both areas with regards to another business setup. That one is being kept under wraps for the moment though, as there is a wide open niche in Melbourne AND Gold Coast that hasn't been exploited yet (that I can see).

Keep the comments coming, what are both places like for "car scene"? NZ seems to be filled with assholes at the moment in the scene, so would be nice to go somewhere that is civil.

Oh, and I will be bringing over the FTO as well, unless something drastic happens over the next 2 years I can't see me selling it though :D

Jesus, that is damn cheap. I'm in Wellington CBD at the moment and we are paying $400 per week.

If that is the case, I think we could happily live in Melbourne CBD if necessary

i forgot to mention that thats prolly for a unit... sorry... lol.. most of the CBD housing is units with basement parkings n living in a skyscraper...

When you say unit, you mean apartment right? And when you say that price, are they pokey tiny little holes? Or semi decent size?

Think we are planning a trip in the next 6 months or so to Gold Coast and Melbourne to size up some areas and see what is available house/apartment/cardboard box styles

st kilda isnt a bad place its actually got a GREAT nightlife.

prolly avoid western sub, like Werribee the northern area Preston n dont go too far out the southern subs to areas like Cranbourne/Pakenham....

i reckon stick to eastern n inner south 'urbs

also, i like the taste of melbs water.. it has fluride in it unlike brissy
