Got a spare starter to try? The starter solenoid is actually on the the starter..
Simon I think this might be prob try another starter if you can was the one you replaced new? how long ago?

I think its the origanal starter.
ok look at this diagram
So wouldnt that mean thats something to do with the starter wire. Should that be only 10.4v or should that be 12v?

in all hoesntly now when you place the wire on the starter wire and bridge it to the positive wire wouldt that indicate that the starter solodoidahs soemthign wrong with it?and iv never gone there but the voltage should only vary if there is a resistance in the wire or actually some load in which the voltage would change however my guess would be 10.4V.and im studying electrical engineering(don't i feel embarassed).
i dono if this will help jsut checked one of my uni books and was reading and iv come up with the following conclusion mate ok so the starter solonoid recieves a massive current from the car battery and a small current from the ignition switch. when you turn your ignition it sends the small current to the starter solonoid and then a large electrical current is relayed to the starter motor mkaing it star t and thus making the engine start.Now if your sarter motor is fine and working 100% then my money is on the solonoid on top of the starter motor.

Just solonoid has sh*t itself nothing you can do about it just wear and tear can hapen to any car 
new one should last a long long time dont forget car is now 13 years old.....

I've just figured it out. Any 'help' thread on FTOAustralia is exactly the same as every episode ever of House.

just spoke to mechanic on phone he reckons if i can bridge the strter motor then its not the starter motor, its pobably something like the nuetral park switch anyone know where that is?

Hey Simon,
Hope this helps. If the mechanic believes that the 'neutral saftey switch' is the problem i would check that first as he has far more experience than I do. That said, in my opinion it could only be located in 2 places. Either the gearbox or on the shift selector(more likely).
If you can short between the positive terminal and the starter and successfully start the engine I can only determine 4 possible causes for the fault(assuming your wirring diagram is accurate). Either the ignition switch, starter relay, Neutral saftey switch or the starter soleniod.
These are the steps I would fault find in,
1. Check the battery voltage
2. Check the voltage at the ignition switch(both power and switch wire)
3. Check the starter relay is engaging and measue the voltage
4. Check the voltage at the starter solenoid(both power and switch wire. if there is no voltage then I would guess that the neutral saftey switch is faulty)
Dont forget to check for broken wires or faulty connections. I hope this helps anyway. Might even save you some $. Im sure calling out an auto electrician cant be cheap.
