sorry, this is a little bit off topic but when i saw driving from adelaide to queensland in limp mode made me think, what has been the longest anyones driven in limp mode before? Can it cause any damage, i guess it would depend on the nature of the problem.

Wouldn't you believe it, the damn tiptronic auto has died!
i can only get reverse no drive at all, not even 3rd.
It's been down shifting pretty harshly in auto the last couple of weeks, then last night it suddenly hit a box full of nothing..backed off a coup[le of secs, then got some drive to get around the corner into the driveway.
Now there's nothing forward at all with the 4th gear light flashing. Did a reset, no flashing but still nothing...trans fluid is fine, bit dirty but no burning smells.

Any ideas on this problem??
I heard the trans ECU can be a problem, but I'm wondering if the box is stuffed.
It's only done 130k's with a service at 90k.
Anyone know what the main problems are with this box, other than the input shaft sensor?
or...where I can get a decent replacement box??
need help here guys!

First step is to check the tip box ECU codes. Much like checking the normal ECU codes, it will tell you if a sensor has packed up - like input or output speed sensors.

I'll check that out today. I take it you use the normal engine ECU diagnostic connector for the tip ECU test, and it flashes up the trans neutral light as well as any code on the check engine light.
Thanks for helping out..kind of concerned about the problem, the car is sitting in the driveway.

Just while I'm here, and going off topic for a minute..
I noticed a few references from reliable sources a while back about faulty electrolytic capacitors fitted to Mitsubshi ECU's. Seems Mitsu changed the chemical compound in the capacitors in the mid 90's which shortened the life span of the capacitors, then realised there was a problem and rectified it some years later.
From what I understand, FTO ecu's were effected and give trouble after a ~8-10 year period. There seems to be a practice of swapping out the old capacitors & fitting new ones to avoid problems, by certain repairers.
Anyone know about this problem? I expect faulty ECU's would be showing up by now if it was.

Spot on. From memory the list of codes is on the WA FTO owners site...

Not sure about the ECU's. Don't seem to be many people having trouble with them. Some suspect it but usually turns out to be something else...

Interesting though...
