It hadn't occurred to me to actually look in the engine bay to see if anything was amiss.

Mostly because I don't really know what bugger all is in there and how to tell if it isn't working properly. But I did spot this, and I have a hunch that it's the cause of the odd scraping noise. Would others concur?

Did it make a noise almost like the tyre scrubbing the arch liner? Usually you can hear it around 2000 rpm?

Nah once the broken rib fucked off and stopped flapping around it didn't even make a noise and worked like a normal belt...

Hmmm, well. I guess I'll see if a new belt makes any difference, if not I guess I still have to find the source. This better not turn out into an Astron-esque wild goose chase.
