I was using the top of the line Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 and for some reason, the engine is quite noisy, until i changed back to the usual Castrol Magetic 10W-40 and the noise has dropped down considerably.

Well, every engine behaves slightly differently so i guess its normal.

I've tried everything and magnetec works best. I may try a 15w40 next and see what happens.

for the current weather, it only make sense to go 0W/5W rather than going upwards to 15W.

The mechanic who worked on my car said that oils like ELF, Mobil, and some other brands i forgot, were good.

So what's the final verdict after years of testing? haha.

I've been running Mobil 1 in my car even since I got it over 2 years ago and it seems to be pretty good. It's 0W-30W fully synthetic. Only thing is it's a bit pricy.

What is the current recommended oil to use now? (I've read the entire thread)

Looking to pickup the Motul 300v for the Manual GPX. Question is, keeping QLD summer in mind, should I go for 5w30 or 10w40?

Also going to pick up a Purolator PureOne oil filter. I found the following part numbers from Dwayne's website:

Been running Castrol edge 5-30 full synthetic for a few months now, and i must say my engine is absolutely loving it
Bought it on special to give it a whirl (like 40 bucks from 100) and its definitely doing what it's supposed to. Came down from 15-40 and haven't heard anything from tappets or nothing, such a smoother feel.
Got the thumbs up from me =)
Doubled that with a standard ryco filter too

Hmmm, Castrol. I use Motul5100 (everyday use) and Motul7100 (trackdays) on my bikes (and I absolutely love them!!), so was leaning towards the Motul.
Are you guys around QLD? 5w30 looks like a good choice. But being summer I was thinking of going 10w40.

Anybody know about the part number for the oil filter?

im having terrible oil consumption when using 5W-30. maybe its just my own engine problem. been googling and there can be two main faults: worn pistons or worn valve seals, or both.
How can i check those faults?
Did compression test a year ago and it was ok.

btw, oil filter is same with most other mitsubishi cars. Z411
fuel filter is Z441

5W-30 are deemed to be fuel conserving oils.

Ofcos the quality of oil plays a huge part but how about the rating in this case?

Yes and no. For an engine designed to use a 5W30, u wouldn't want to run something as heavy as a 50 or 60. If you were running a turbo with much higher boost than normal, putting out much higher power figures, you would probably want to run a little bit heavier, simply due to the heat and increased stress within the engine, but if you're running a quality synthetic u generally want to stick close to spec.

Engine Oil has one of the highest levels of misinformation, misunderstanding and general associated bullshit of just about any other automotive component out there, just take Penrites +10 campaign as a good example

Supercheap doesn't stock them, Autobarn only has 2l Motul 300vs, no one has Purolator filters.

For redline, try autoone stores (not 100% sure). There's one in beaudesert. They might stock purolator filters as well.

k&n filter it is. if not the redline, I might pick up Motul 300v 5w30 then (5w30 good for qld summers?) any idea how much does the 5l jar of motul 300v 5w30 cost? (think i can order that from Autobarn)

Qld summer isn't that hot really. Mostly hovering around 30 degrees on daytime and does cools down at night.

What's your current mileage/odo? If it's high then stick to 10w-40.
Thinner/lighter oils tend to sips through your gasket/seals, causing oil leak if the gasket/seals not doing their job well enough as they ages.

5l 300v would cost you somewhere around 150.

i got the purolators from autoone from Newcastle. they had a dozen left and i took all of it.
