Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
Well, from the factory they run 10 pound boost. I run 18 pound & there's a couple of guys on OZVR4 running in the low 20s.spetz wrote:Bennoz, how much boost can the 6A13TT handle, and what is the weakest link?
Are the rods between NA and turbo the same, as is the case with the 6A12 NA and TT?
Rods are bigger in the TT, but they are still the weak link. They're designed to be the weak link. Having said that, guys are safely run 2 x times the boost they were designed for, so there's a 2.x factory safety caluculation gone into the rod calculations from the factory.

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
And do you think that those rods, shotpeened, crack tested, nitrided etc etc, would cope at 8,500rpm or so without boost?
There was another question I had for you but can't remember now... when I do I will post up here

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
I remembered...
When you got your 6A13TT, did you know if it was from a manual or auto?
And, if it is from an auto, would it work on a manual gearbox or need some modifications? What flywheel would be used?
As I see most VR4s are automatic

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
I imagine they would have been crack tested, I doubt shot peened & nitrided. You dont really nitride a rod, its a more suitable hardening for something with large bearing surfaces, ie the crank. I reckon they'd handle that rpm without issue. I've over revved mine on the track to that level by mistake a few times, didn't do any harm.spetz wrote:And do you think that those rods, shotpeened, crack tested, nitrided etc etc, would cope at 8,500rpm or so without boost?

Mine came off a manual. I bought the whole half cut & sold off the box.spetz wrote:I remembered...

Wouldn't matter if it was auto or manual, the block is the same. The first thing you attach to it is the FTO sandwich plate, then FTO flywheel, FTO clutch & FTO box. It all just bolts on.

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
Do you know if there are ARP rod bolts available for the 6A13TT stock rods?
btw I found the 6A13 R/S ratio is 1.71 whereas the 6A12 is 1.81.
Both are pretty decent for high rpm.
Can you get part numbers at all for engine parts?
Would you be able to tell if the 6A13 shares pistons with any 4G9X series motor?
I think they should, as the 4G91 has 78.4mm pistons (like the 6A12) and the 4G92/3 has 81mm pistons.
The 4G93 DOHC revs to 7,500rpm with an 89mm stroke, so that piston with a better R/S ratio and only 80.8mm stroke should rev easily past 8,000rpm

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
Yes you can get ARP bolts for it.
Too hard to find out about pistons, there are 30-40 different part numbers in ASA, including all the different sizes available & part revisions over the 15 years there were in production.
Interesting to note there is a 1mm oversize available by the looks of it. Which would add almost 0.4 of a litre in cap...

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
ASA is the new caps?
1mm oversize would make it 2560cc, a 2.6L.
I know that people have used the 6A13TT pistons in 4G9X applications (can't remember which) to lower the CR to roughly 8.5:1 which is the same as the 13TT.
By that theory the opposite should be true too, using a 10-11:1 4G9X piston, I think anyway

Yes, ASA is new CAPS.
Almost, goes from 2476cc to 2538cc
So long as your deck heights match up you can use whatever like.

Don't let the cost of Ben's put you off is he has done a sh*t load of work in it.Technikhaus wrote:just read all 50 pages![]()

If you just do a straight change over you could do it for 10-15K with some small mods.

10-15k gets you a 6A13TT AWD VR4 Galant AND your FTO...
Or 15K + sell your FTO = Evo VI
Modifying is stupid, we are just addicts really

Yea, I'd love to do it, but it would have to wait until I have finished UNI, and am working full-time again ~2.5Years away...

This! ^spetz wrote:Modifying is stupid, we are just addicts really

Yeah you could do it cheaper than what I did. I was a crash test dummy for a number of things. Things got done twice, when a little bit of know-how would have resulted in only do things once.
Car gets driven almost everyday, drives a treat. Only things on the to-do list are fuel pump (slightly smaller, substantially quieter lol) and some air flow modifications on the front of the car to keep temps down when out on the track.
Further down the track, its due for a respray.

Re: Bennoz 6A13 Conversion
Bennoz can you comment how the exhaust note changed after your conversion?
On start up etc, is it distinguishable from the 6A12?
