Driver jailed for blowing up speed camera

Driver jailed for blowing up speed camera
September 7, 2006 - 8:45AM

His driving was too swift, but his thinking wasn't.

A 28-year-old man who blew up a speed camera, hoping to destroy evidence of his speeding, was sentenced to prison for four months today.

Craig Moore, 28, from Doncaster, said he had seen a flash of light from the camera, indicating that it had detected him speeding on August 14, 2005.

He claimed he feared his drivers licence would be suspended, making him unable to work to support his family.

So, he employed thermite, used in his work as a welder, to destroy the camera.

That backfired because images of his speeding survived the explosion, and so did images of him returning to attack the camera.

Moore earlier had pleaded guilty to a charge of damaging property.

"The defendant accepts that he has created a mountain out of a molehill by behaving stupidly. He finds himself in a great deal of trouble rather than the little deal of trouble he would have been in," said defence lawyer Andrew Bailey.

In fact, he would have been in no trouble.

Tameside Council confirmed that the Watchman camera was designed to deter speeders, not catch them, and that it flashed only as a warning.

However, the Watchman does contain cameras which monitor the area, and that's what caught Moore.

The funny thing about this is that he would have never been busted for ANYTHING if he didn't attack the camera rofl

i remember a while back (cant remember where either now, i know it was in aus though)

a guy distracted a cop who was speed trapping (the stationary 4wd ones not the radar guns), while a couple of ppl stole the plates off the cop car and put it on to their own car and sped past the camera 17 times.

i dont think they ended up getting caught either (i think they used a white commodore)

i'd have to say though, these guys did a better job than the gy blowing up the camera, dont get me wrong he's still cool in my books but i just thought i'd share the story.

cheers

I used to roll fixed speed cameras out. for the RTA when i worked for the place that designed them We lost a few in Syndey...lol how do u loose them u ask??? well thats a bloody good question but we did and I saw what was left.

Fire bombs...bricks and shootings were all common. So we made them bullet proof until we did them in the USA (CA) and a dood got some high powered auto rifle and spretyed some..lol had some good pics somewhere.

well the stupid thing is, how do these idiots that blow up speed cameras know that the image isn't sent somewhere as soon as it's taken??

I sure as hell don't see someone getting up there and changing the roll of film in the camera lol
