Urgent diagnosis help needed

Post by Toohey »

I recently bought a 95 GPX tiptronic FTO and it was due for its 100K service. Went to get it done, and when I got it back the car was surging and stalling very badly to the point of being completley undriveable. Returned it and the TPS switch was dead. Their mechanic had tried to adjust it and fried it instead. Got the TPS replaced (I was pretty dirty about that) but now when I drive it there is a new problem.
At idle the engine sounds like a diesel. There is hesitation on accelleration between 1000 & 1500 RPMs but the worst is when at idle & startup. At idle the car revs between 500 & 250 RPM and shakes very badly. Put it in neutral and the car smooths out at 1000RPM. On startup there is absolutley no power for 2-3 blocks. The car won't rev above 1500 RPM when cold and there is always a fuel smell coming from the exhaust. I'm of the opinion that the mechanic has donkey f****d my car and it needs to be re-serviced. Can anyone give me any ideas as to the causes of the problem I'll have a lot more ammo against him

Thanks in advance!

Sounds odd.

A good point to remember is that everytime the battery is disconnected for a few minutes the ECU resets itself. Thus meaning that everytime I reset the ECU and try driving straight away I will stall at every stop and the car will be undriveable.

You should idlefor at least 15mins then drive the car gently for a few journeys. This will enable the ECU to learn the correct fueling for idling and each gear.

Try resetting again by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery and let the ECU learn again. This is the easiest, and cheapest first step to diagnosing your problem.

Sounds like the replacement TPS was not adjusted properly. Its one of the few things the ecu uses to determine air/fuel ratio including the O2 exhaust sensor, coolant temp sensor and air flow meter (GR). Sounds like the car may be running a bit rich, thinking your throttle is open more than it really is. Get it properly adjusted.

Sounds like a plan. I'm taking it back to the shop on Monday and will tell them to do a tune up and check all the settings. Then we'll see how things flush out.
