6A12 Engine Blow Reports

Post by Jono »

I think for the good of the community and info it would be good to report any blown engines including factors such as oils used, External temps, etc etc.

Its seems to be happening quite a bit in the UK and AUS at the moment

I know some people wont want to share this information, but whoever wants to is a champion.

It may steer some people out of trouble when using some specific oils or driving styles. lol, Ill Kick it off

i would say driving your car on a track on a 35 degree day would be the main cause 8O

My money is on oil starvation due to hot temps and very good grip because of it, if the oil started to breakdown you would also have cam issues etc.

Synthetic oil is good for up to 140 deg C. thats very hot.

35 degree was a generous estimate,

thing is , i had already had one session about 30 mins earlier. shoulda blown then as i was goin harder in the first session..

I actually was on my 2nd hot lap after 2 warm up laps.

Boris was there, he had no issues, and he was on Castrol R 5w 30

Then it is quite possible that you pumped your sump dry because the oil was slightly too thick and the oil temp did not come up to full operating temp.

Did you get any blue smoke out of the exhaust before the engine failure?

Going on hot laps was hard to notice blue smoke, but i did notice drop in performance on my second lap.

If i ever go to the track id get a oil cooler installed

Had a friend which also spun a bearing on a rod
Bent rod, and cracked the crank

Caused due to no oil in the engine I think

My engine apparently has a main end bearing going. But I have driven it like that for about 20,000km and is fine for now?

Anyway, engine came from wrecked FTO so don't know

wakefield is a tricky track. someone like borris knows how to balanace out the pushing vs the performance... if you hammer a car in 35 degree heat around wakefiled full pelt, ie 2nd 3rd gear all day... youll definetly start having issues unless you have some serius cooling hardware.

i my self had a blown engine when i bought my car it lasted a whole week before blowing in 5th gear crusing a highway to work... the crank just snaped and o god that was a noise...
