Remove your air intake - just below the throttle body is the stepper. Remove the 2 x 10mm bolts that hold it on & romve the plug from the back of it.

Usually it will just require a clean. The plunger end is the part that sits in the intake & usually gets covered in carbon. If not, it could be a loose wire in the plug that causes failure.

Here is the actual testing procedure from the UK site:

HOW TO TEST YOUR STEPPER MOTOR

Try this if you can get your mits on a multimeter.

Look at the plug, on the motor, it should look like this :

clip
.....\
___M___
[1][2][3]
[4][5][6]

I've labelled the pins 1 through to 6

With the engine warm, test the resistance between 2 and 1 and then between 2 and 3. You should get a reading of 28 - 33 ohms.

Then again with 5 and 6, then 5 and 4. You again get a reading of 28 - 33 ohms.

If you don't, then the coil in the motor is fried. Replace the motor or get it re-wound (probably cheaper to replace it !)

If that works OK, then the motor should be OK. ]

TAKE CARE WITH THE NEXT BIT

To test the motor you will need a 6 volt power supply some wire and lots of patience ! Firstly, use the additional wire to break the positive and negative wires from the psu into two.

Connect the positive wire to 2 and 5 (which are positive-common)

Then connect the negative wire in the following sequence of pairs

1 & 4
3 & 4
3 & 6
1 & 6
1 & 4

Then repeat in the opposite direction.

This should make the motor move in steps (hence it's name) backwards and forwards. You should feel the motor move, although it may not do anything on the first pass at all.

If the motor works then I'd check the cabling to the motor. It may also be a sensor.

If you don't feel or hear any vibration then the motor is faulty and you need to get yourself a new one.

$195 was a bit steep but i got sick of the idleing probs let alone trying to find someone who sold new ones. :)

does your idle level drop when ac is turned on or idldes higher when in nutural?

if so its your stepper motor. Buy one from Kempys or source a seondhand one. Usually with the stepper one of the coils is basically fried. get a second hand stepper with at least one coil and soldier the good coil onto your existing one.
