What is this thing for??

I was tuning my amp the other weekend and as i cranked up the volume, i noticed that there is a crapload of exterior vibration from the rear and upon closer inspection, it turns out that there is a tray-like piece of metal bolted underneath the bootfloor (near the axles) and its rattling like a bitch when the sub is thumping away....

what purpose does this piece of 'tray' serve and can it be removed without any danger to handling etc?

any help is appreciated fellas!

i think that might be the heat shield for the original muffler

i put rubber stoppers between them, seemed to do the trick.
