The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

No, I believe what happen to that engine was combination of few things,
1. His got an old school afc & I believe that wasn't tune properly, which caused detonation.
2. The car was mistreated & wasn't service properly by the previous owner,
3. Something was drop during one of the services.
And those eBay products could cause the same problem as number one.

Don't put it on.
In certain situations you may get a minor increase in performance but the risks far outweigh the benefits of such a device.
If you want more power, consider the following:
- intake mods (cold air intake, better piping)
- exhaust mods (hi flow cat, larger exhaust, extractors)
- ECU (either a 'piggyback' like the Apexi SAFC/ Greddy emanage, or a standalone system like Microtech / EMS / etc)
Don't take shortcuts when looking to upgrade your car.
