Electric clutch dying on air con

Post by HiRAEdd »

About 2 weeks ago my car started making a horrible "bearings-are-about-to-crumble" type sound, intermittently, when MIVEC kicked in. I've taken it out on a quiet road and basically thrashed the guts out of it until I was able to diagnose it is in the air con system and most probably the electric clutch on the air con is slipping at high revs.

So, just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the electric clutch dying on their air con? If so, any feedback on costs to fix?

I've never seen any info on the air con being a problem in FTO's but it stands to reason that it's going to wear out quicker on such a high revving engine. So the obvious suggestion here is to turn the air con off if you're about to do more than just a quick acceleration. Does anyone know of any info relating to the air con in FTO's or even just air con in any high revving car?

mine did that, was $170 for a new air con motor, if your going to replace it yourself (requires removing belts etc) make sure u empty your air con gas FIRST otherwise itl all blow up in your face... and it stinks!

Yep, mine went as well... clutch packed up intermittently & during a few 'hot laps' it tore up more than it fair share of belts. When the clutch is gone, you really have to replace the whole compressor unit. Mitsi wanted $915 8O for one & it was a 3 week wait. I went & grabbed one from a wrecker for $350...

God bless wreckers - the unit they gave me a had a shot pulley bearing in it, so we swapped the bearing for the one in my existing unit & she came up ok.

Then (doing this legally mike! lol) it cost me $200 more for labour & 'greenhouse friendly' removal of the gas, new dryer unit & regas with dye (to check if there were any leaks in the system)

Tis now Icy cold

:D

And whenever you go for a wrap you should turn the air-con off! It put heaps of weight on the crank & slows you up...
