Well 2005 has been the year of the blown torque converter... but no - generally speaking neither gearbox is particularly weak. Im yet to hear of a manual box blowing up either.

Genuine Mitsubish parts are expensive. However there are many aftermarket parts supppliers around. We can generally point you in the right direction for the bits you need.

Insurance is not too bad - especially cause its a non turbo car. I've seen prices ranging from 2k to 700 depending on circumstance.

When buying - look out for previous accident damage, GR's dressed up as Mivec GPX's, bullsh*t odometre readings, if the motor has done over 100,000 ask if a major service was done (ie timing belt & water pump changed)

The gearbox is one of the best around. It's the clutch that is the weakest point. That's normal with any sports car though.

I had a blown torque converter as well on my Tip box but apparently they're very strong Tip boxes being able to handle up to 200kW atw on turbo FTOs.

jay,
my car spends enough time on the race track to destory most cars... the fto has put up with a huge amount of punishment...

i've blown the clutch in the tip to smithereeeeeeeeens (literally) and the torque converter gave up.... but considering the punishment it received i have to say its anything but weak....

It is also possible to take out the gearbox and take it to a performance workshop to get it strengthened. If its strength your worried about then if you got the $$$ then you can do anything you want.

And that is the way they're designed. You're going to have to have a weak point somewhere in the car.

You can take an STi Chris. They ONLY have something like 480nm of torque!

It would be interesting to know if WildRide can take an STi actually. Surely Jeff and Danny can if they don't get too much wheel spin on take off.

Well we can line up Lee's JDM STI against W.R's turbo FTO. But been into both ride i just think Lee's STI will win.

Actually we should line up Mikey's & W.R's again. But we have to find a very long private rd.

*Quick note* I've been into HKSFTO when Scarcy still had it. So i didn't steal W.R's for joy ride

funny enough I lined up against what i think was a black STI last night in the city...actually for the first time I actually thought it was a WRX I could buy...it had no badges...but it went damn fast...although i did notice my cornering was a bit better around the massive roundabout near Melb. Uni...but maybe thats becuase I am sucidal and just hammer the corners even if I think I might die...hehe

BTW..Buy a FTO...there are some good ones on Carsales for like 14k-15k it sould be an easy decission...
