...HELP...

Post by NorthQLDFTO »

Okay...This has just started this morning...I've had the car for a week & she has run like a dream, and as I know the previous owner well I know it's been treated like a baby and had no previous problems...

I start the car & everything is fine but after about 5 minutes of driving the problem begins... When I come to a stop (such as at traffic lights) the car seems to 'shudder' then when I go to move off again it takes a few seconds for the car to go even with the accellerator depressed. When it does take off it seems to slam into gear hard and lurches, then the revs seem to take ages to get up there and the gears don't change until it's high into the rev range (eg 7000rpm)...

It's a Tip Auto and I'm driving with it in Auto mode, not game to try Tip until I know whats going on!!!

PLEASE HELP!

try resetting the ECU first.
Take off the battery connectors (- first, then +) for couple of hours.
See if this fixes it.

hesitation like that can be the fuel pump (give the previous owner the benefit of the doubt on this one you just can't tell)...

the other option is an electrical fault... does it have any after market electronics on it?

i've had a similar problem before but mines hacked pretty hard with a piggy back, RSM and VAFC...

Fuel Pump huh!?! Okay...Unfortunately I can't have that checked by a mechanic until Monday! If it was the fuel pump would it still be safe to drive (very carefully) as I need the car to get around!
As for electrical...No engine mods have been done yet...All cosmetic enhancements... Well, except for a Viper Alarm system I had installed 3 days ago???

Okay...I just took the car down the road to see how she's going & it's still acting all weird, but this time I noticed that the (N) on the dash gear display was flashing, not to mention the fact that it was also telling me that I was in 3rd gear the whole time... I recalled seeing something in this forum about this and I was right, FTO617 reported a similar problem which people seemed to agree was the Speed Sensor... Does it sound like I have the same problem???

do you get a vibration when car is under load?

eg when in 3rd gear 10km/h and try to accellerate?

YAY!!

You're going through the exact same problem I am right now......once my replacement sensor gets here I'm going to do a write up on how to change it and fix the infamous "Flashing N"

Your input speed sensor is stuffed (hopefully). I'm currently waiting for my part to arrive from NZ. It's only 90ish dollars and you can do the swap yourself. Your only pain will be waitng the week and a bit it takes to get here.

Yes you can drive the car without it, but you will eventually screw something and make it worse. It's been a week since I've driven mine.

And while I'm waiting I'm going to see if maybe cleaning the sensor has something to do with it. Worth a shot seeing as I'm going to be replacing it anyway.

Cool... Keep me posted on how this goes... I've got the FTO booked into a transmission specialist on Wednesday just to be sure though.

limp mode doesn't mean torque converter...

things to check are

TPS
Input Speed sensors

and MOST IMPORTANT

do you have oil? when was it last changed... it could be that simple...

oh and i wouldn't be driving on it...

Gimmie a couple of minutes and I'll have an image of the culprit sensor uploaded

Ok, this is where the sensor is located in the overall scheme of things called your engine bay.

Circled in red is the speed input sensor (one of two apparently, but this is the one that causes the problems). Unfortuntately I was unable to actually remove the sensor due to the big bastard circled in yellow. Anyone got any idea what this is and how can I move it?

It sits right ontop of the screw that holds the sensor in

standard oem filter is fine

i use REDLINE ATF for the tip... it varies in price depending on how you treat your car... for my car i pay 30.00 per litre approx for the highest quality. you need about 4/5 litres

download the service manuals if your not confident but its pretty simple.
1. drive your car for 10 mintues
2. undo one of the rubber pipes at the bottom of the radiator (it comes from the gearbox).
3. turn on the engine and watch the oil pump out
4. DO NOT RUN YOUR CAR FOR MORE THAN 45 SECONDS!!!!!
OR
5. as soon as the oil stops coming out TURN OFF THE CAR. whichever happens first!.
6. leave it for 30 minutes to drain any residue.
7. do everything up
8. fill up the gearbox.
9. run the car make sure there are no leaks and double and tripple check the oil level.

oh ... and i can't help you on that last one... perhaps some deep heat ;)

 Okay... Mechanic checked the car... Oil levels & condition are all A+... Diagnostics came back all clear, it's definately not electrical... So now I have to wait for nearly a week while they pull out the transmission and check it all over! (waves bye bye to his $$$)
