When I bought my car almost 2 years ago, the dealer pushed me to purchase a 3 years warranty from ASWN with the car as well.
First, I thought the warranty is another way to scam money from buyers for dealers.
Top of the range warranty from ASWN for my FTO was around $1000, and as far as I remember, the dealer sold it to me for once of payment of $700.
The way the warranty works is that, all items (engine, electronics, suspension, brakes, abs, turbo, ecu, etc…, and all other parts) in the car covered up to $2000 for mechanical failure per claim. For eg; if the engine blows out, they immediately pay $2000 towards the process to replace it. However, they do not pay for tear and wear, for eg; they don’t pay for a new set of tyres or adjusting the tappets.
I haven’t claim anything since I bought the car, till last week.
When I did a read on error codes last time, I have realized that both left and right rear ABS speed sensors have failed, they were not working. They needed to be changed. So, I call Mitsubishi to get a quote.
Hang on to your seats now!!! They quoted me $700 per sensor, plus $230 in labour. So, overall, I was looking to at more than $1600 to replace two speed sensors. I was shocked!!! Next thing I called the warranty company - ASWN - and my car is at Mitsubishi Service now, they are changing the sensors. ASWN paid for everything, except $50 in excess postage.
At the end, all it cost me is $50, instead of over $1600. It looks that I already take my money back and more from ASWN, and there is still another year for them to cover my car against any mechanical failure.
The moral of the story, I strongly recommend to get a decent warranty when purchasing an import car, which is close to or over 100k kms. It might save you big $$$ and let you have a good sleep at night.

I had one on my VR-4 and it paid for some repairs to the 4WS system that would have otherwise been rather expensive.

Warranties are like insurance, you only need them when something goes wrong and they'll only pay out if you've met all the terms and conditions.
They're great if something does go wrong and you've met all the T&Cs but a waste of money if nothing goes wrong or if you void the T&Cs.
Just beware that the T&Cs of some warranties are so strict that it's virtually impossible not to break them.

There is only 2 conditions with my warranty.
- Have to service the car every 6 months. (which is already what I do anyways, oil change every 3k-5k kms).
- Have to send the service receipt to the warranty company. (surely not that of a hard thing to do to go to the post office for 2 minutes)
And, as long as there is a mechanical failure, they have to simply fix it.
