Noisy Tappets

Post by ROBiiE »

Hey everyone,

I have bloody noisy tappets! I went to Unique Autosports and they confirmed this and they said that they are not sure how much it will cost them to adjust them, quoting me anywhere between $1000-$2000. I think that is way toooo much. I remember hearing on this forum that someone had them adjusted for about $300 or so. Any ideas on where to get them adjusted and how much it will roughly cost?

Thanx in advance

you have already made a mistake by going to UAS for starters... i have came across countless complaints against them, and i assure you they're not just from this forum alone!

Thats fair enough although in my experience with them they have been pretty good. Anyway, lets not turn this thread into a slagging contest!

I just need some help! I'm actually going to try and adjust them myself on the weekend. My old man is a bit of a mechanic and has done everything on the cars he has owned in the past so we'll give it a go.

I have found a website (http://www.funky-fto.co.uk/tool.html) that describes the process and it doesn't sound too difficult. I also have the workshop manuals and stuff for reference. Should be exciting! Hopefully we don't cock it up. I'll let you all know how I go.

Cheers

Had a go at adjusting the valves and all seemed well. A few were out of adjustment and we made the necessary adjustments. Apparently a special tool is required, but the old man had a tool at home and it worked perfectly. As if it was made for the job :)

Anyway, we assembled everything back together and oh oh. The car is now idling way too high. When its idling the revs continuously go from like 1200 to 1500 rpm, back and forth, back and forth. I took it for a drive, and as long as the accelerator is pressed the car runs fine. As soon as I let go, and the revs drop down to about 1200 rpm, the revs go from 1200 to 1500 rpm repeatedely. We resetted the ECU by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins and the problem still occurred.

Anyone got any ideas? I'll probably take it to SCI to get it looked at since they are the only guys who I know who have had extensive experience with the FTO. Can anyone recommend any other place?

Cheers
