Got rorted by a Smash Repairer - opinions please

Post by sunraider »

Hi Guys,

I need an idea of what exactly is meant to be done on the car when placing a spoiler on.

I paid the guy $200 to do a fit and respray. He did not mention to me any time that he would not be filling in and respraying the boot lid. He plugged up the holes with pins, and there are chips around the paintwork on the pins.

I thought at the very least, if he wasnt going to fill in the holes (and he knew that i didnt know much about fitting and respraying etc) he should have told me that if I wanted to respray it, it would cost me extra. At no time did he even mention that, which led me to believe that he didnt fill in the holes on purpose.

He also charged me $100 for his auto-electrician to fit my new foggies and inidcators. The indicators are really fast. Can this be fixed?

Also, my foggies turn on everytime my headlights are on. He wired it incorrectly but he reckons he wired them correctly.

Any advise anyone, because im getting into arguements with this guy and Im not sure how to approach him to threaten that he does the right thing by me?

Thanks

Are all your indicators actually working? Usually they only go really fast when there is a blown bulb or one is disconnected ... and then usually only on the one side that is affected.

Well did you point out that you have a switch for your fog lights and its there to turn them on or off regardless if the main beam is on?

Also when you requested him to fit your spoiler did you actually asked about a boot lid respray or fillling the wholes?
Even though you might not "know" much about this its not up to the mechanic to assume that you know/don't know. Before undertaking any work you really need to ask questions even more so if you don't know much about it.

You can threaten him with ACCC or consumer affairs if you like but if he fitted and painted the spoiler correctly then i don't think they might find much wrong with what he did.

I have worked in the trade (panel and paint) and $200 to paint and refit a spolier is a good price.
If you needed to get a spolier painted and bootlid welded and painted you would probably be looking at about $700

If you dont tell them what work you want done they not going to just read your mind and do it for you.

yup i pointed out that the foggies switch is separate, and he said that they will only be fitting it onto the existing circuit. Both indicators are working, however as I said, they are veryyyy rapid, and im not sure if its gonna blow soon due to how fast its going. He said that its most probably the indicators and that they wired it up correctly, but he tried to dupe me a few times throughout the process of doing my car so I dont really trust him. I think the indicators are able to be regulated somehow and it should be going much much slower.

Anyways, at least im relieved about the filling in holes part. we didnt really discuss as to what exactly will be done. So i guess that's my fault. However he did chip a little bit of paintwork around the holes which Im scared may get rusty later, so ill get him to check it out again. $200 was a good price i guess. Pics coming up this weekend.
