Dashboard blank switches

Post by quoforever »

Hi guys , im new here and new to my FTO mivec :D

Can anyone tell me what options the blank switchs are on the dash ( 1 opps the fog switch and 2 near the mirrow switch?...im looking to put some under car neons on it but dont want to use the horrible rocker switch that came with the kit so was wondering bout using a mitsi switch to go in the blanks for neatness.......
Also mine is a 4 sp tiptronic and was wondering about this mivec power?...when does it come on?...ive taken it uptp 5k rpm but no higher

cheers guys

MIVEC is when your cams change to a higher power mode - the more mechanical minded people here would be better able to explain it.

It generally comes on at 5k, I've noticed that in first gear it comes into play at about 4.5k.

If you want to know when the engine engages MIVEC - turn off the radio, wind down the winow and listen to the note of the engine, it will change a bit (depending on mods) when MIVEC engages.

The switch opposite the fog lights is the arial motor switch, this controls the height of the arial.
The other switchs you mention MAY be your mirror controls, dimmer switch or traction control, I'm not sure.

I too am about to put underbody (and interior) neons on the car. I've just installed a new single din head deck in mine and have yet to put a blanking plate in. I'm thinking of drilling a hole in the blanking plate and mounting the switch there.

Just an idea if you've got a blanking plate.

Not sure off the top of my head what factory options go there. I've been told that Mitsubishi Galant's (somewhere in the 90's) had the same dash and you can get switches to fit them. For example I want to move my dashboard dimmer switch down there using a Galant dashboard dimmer switch. I don't know what year and thus far I haven't found one so if you find anything out, I'd realllllly appreciate knowing about it.

Mivec generally kicks in between 5,500 & 6,000 revs. You'll know it when it happens, the engine pitch changes and acceleration increases noticably. Remember too, in auto mode, the car has to learn how you drive. When I owned a tiptronic (fresh import), the car was absolutely terrible for the first week until it learnt how I wanted to drive and it moved the gear changes further and further up the revs.

Unlss you have an aftermarket accessory like a mivec contoller, mivec will kick in at 5500rpm. If you have set it to kick in earlier i would be re-thinking it as this generally causes you to lose power as appossed to gaining it.

Oh and am i the only one who owns a 4sp Tip but never drives it in auto mode??

The 7th Generation Galant (92-96) doesn't have quite the same dash, but it does use much of the same switchgear. The ones you would be after would be the ones that would go down by the mirror adjustment controls in the FTO. In the Galant, there would be foglight, rear window wiper, traction control switches that would fit in that location. The foglight one is probably the easiest and most common to get hold of.

If you're talking about the ones on the side of the dash binnacle, those are specific to the FTO AFAIK.

A few things in regards to this:

1: My MIVEC kicks in at 4500rpm, and I know this is the case as my engine changes its' tone noticably at this stage.

2: Is it it possible that a previous owner has had a controller fitted, changed the MIVEC engagement point and then removed the controller without returning it to the factoy MIVEC point??
I know the car was/has been modified at some point as there are also holes in the boot carpet where an amp has obviously sat.

3: Ha, once I got the hang of tip I never went back to full auto.....just no fun. :D

As far as my understanding goes thats not possible. If you remove the mivec controller then it would revert back to the factory setting of 5500rpm. Have you got anything else installed?

Wowa, I don't know a JohnC.

What I can tell you is that I bought the vehicle private sale of some guy who barely knew what the car was.

He didn't understand MIVEC, let alone what a MIVEC controller was.

Where'd you get the idea I bought it off "JohnC"??

Unless one of the previous owners has hidden the controller somewhere, I don't think it's still there.

it is possible that there is a controller hidden away somewhere, it has happened on more than one occasion, usually when the car was first imported. If you can't track it down i'd be gettin someone to be lookin at why it's switching over so early. With Mivec kicking in that early you would be experiencing a decent loss of power!

It'd be dang interesting if there is one hidden away!

But yes, when in third or fourth gear.....I can push the pedal to the floor (in tip mode) and the car doesn't pick up at all.

Bluntly put....I have never experienced MIVEC in 3rd.

Mivec in 4th is something else, well for a 4sp tip anyway. Can you even hit it in 4th without the speed limiter kicking in?? I've got a mivec controller so mine's de-limited so i wouldn't know

You can get them from Kempys out in Takanini but they aren't cheap - around $40 a switch last time I bought some (for my Galant). There are a number of other places around that do them that may be cheaper, but Kempys is the mecca for Mitsi parts.
