SUNROOF HELP

my sunroof for some reason when opening one time made a crunch when it fully opened, then now it wont close it as if its missing the sensor as it closes then opens back out to the semi opened (vent) position. Someone mentioned that it may have slipped a gear do anyone know if this is the case and how i might be able to fix it. especially with all the crap weather in melb atm.

skip to the bit in the FTO Manual about closing it "manually" seems they anticipated this fk up and couldnt be stuffed fixing it

I have had this happen to me a few times, but every time I go to fix it it is working again. It is something lose in the mechanism. Take the glass off by opening it all the way and removing the back star screws (the ones with a star shape in them, you will need the right bit to fit in it, i got one from Jaycar), then close it as far as you can and remove the front two sets of star screws. Give the arms of the mechanism a bit of a wriggle and see if they close.

Another thing that has worked for me is driving over speed bumps or rough roads with the roof fully open

Just a word of warning, the mechanism is rather greasy, so be careful you don't get any on your interior.

The best person to ask about this is FOULZ, but he isn't on here as often as he used to be, now that he sold his car.

I had a similar problem with mine, it would go towards close then stop and return back , I found one of the roller shafts had moved out and was jamming up, the roof will open up again if it senses any ristricting ( it is a safety precaution as with all powered windows or sunroofs).

As Supplanter said remove the glass, then use the manual crank handle (if you have one should be one in the tool bag, if not you can use an allen key) and manually wind the roof mechanism until the roller becomes visible in the track, if the roller shaft has moved out just push it back in, I am going to put a small drop of araldite on the shaft to stop it moving back out.

I hope this helps, if not you just need to look around when manually cranking the mechanism to see what is causing it to jam and return, just crank it very slowly and gently so as not to damage anything.

I had exactly the same problem, as Airborne said remove the glass and manually wind the window until it wont go any further (the manual wind is under the little removable cover that is where the switches are for the sun roof). On one of the tracks you will see a little silver object in the way. Slide it back in (I used a precision screwdriver cos its very fiddly) and I used a soldering iron to slightly melt the area to stop it coming back out again.... So far its remained in place.

once closed manually wil it work from then on? because im having trouble closing it manually its really hard and i dont wanna break anything

No idea as im not (un)lucky enough to have one of these many faulty sun roof's fitted to my wee beasty. how ever.

have posted these pics of what the FTO Manual suggests (the car even origionally came with a tool to close it manually "IF" it breaks FFS!!!)
and it says close the sunroof and take it to be repaired so im guessing no it wont pop it back into place and keep working.

btw, are you driving round with an open sunroof???

well havnt been driving lately coz of the useless weather lol im fixing it tonite for the friday night cruise..... fingers crossed


ok ive pulled apart the sunroof and there is a little nylon block with a diagonal groove thingy that has broken so im making a homemade one hopefully it will do the trick!
