GEARBOX CRUNCH on high rev
Hi guys,
Gearbox is crunching when shifting up to 3rd during high revs. Would it be a sign of a stuffed synchros?
Does anyone know of a mechanics that has reconditioned FTO Gearbox or maybe some mechanics that can service the gearbox?

hey HRD2BQT

I posted this same issue a while ago. This problem has plagued me for months now.. i hate that noise...
Let me guess even when your full clutch it still hapens...
Mine crunchs @ high revs from 2ND

Try and do that and see what happens.
The suggestions were to try a better Gear box oil - Motul..
Havent tried it yet..im a pickle as i might change my clutch soon so ..... not sure waht 2 do...
Dont wait 2 long to get it checked out....( i think i may have..)

Guys,
If your currently using mineral based gearbox oil and the gearbox is already crunching on changes then I don't suggest going to something synthetic as there is a very good chance it could make it worse. The Synchro's are already worn so the synthetic stuff will not work as well.
I have experienced this previously with a Subaru and ended up flushing out the gearbox and going back to mineral based stuff. (It was fine and started crunching when changed to synthetic Amsoil)
My FTO was hard to change from 4th to 5th when I first bought it 2 years ago, got rid of the dodgy oil that came with it and change the gearbox oil to Castrol VMX(?), haven't had any problems since. Which is good considering the car has gone from the hot Queensland climate down to the Tasmanain one.
Haven' investigated if there is anything better in the mineral based range though.......................
Although if you do have to have a rebuild, probably a good idea to go synthetic from day one.
Cheers
Chris

Re: .
Going up through gears without using the clutch. Pretty much every V8 Supercar driver does it, but their gearboxs are fairly well built to handle that punishment. Wouldn't be doing it on any old gearbox though.jester wrote:Flat-shifting=quick shifting???

Mine only crunches to 3rd - the rest of the gearing is just fine n smooth.
Yeah, I must admit and I knew all along that its due to FLAT SHIFTING

DO NOT USE MOTUL GEARBOX OIL !!
There engine oil is great stufff i use it every service, but My gearbox was fine till i installed the motul gearbox oil, then I got the same problems as you guys described (crunching into 3rd, cant find 1st or rev) then I flushed and used redline reddex oil and straight away the gearbox shifted 100% better, that was 12 months ago and I do have a little problem getting into 1st these days, every other gear shifts very easily. I canot stress enough REDDEX REDLINE OIL !
