5spd manual gearboxes

Post by sickest_wog »

hello, my names pete i onyl just recently joined the forum, john pellington told me about it,. i just bought a 5spd 95 model black GPX FTO, now the gearboxes in it doesnt feel very nice, seems stiff into gear's especially fwhen selecting first when almost comming to a complete stop...my friend has a white one and hes sychroes have stuffed up in 3 gearboxes, 1st gear synchro and changing from 2nd to 3rd at high rev's. he reckons its due to the design of the fto gearbox not allowing the fluid to flow through properly...is this true? ive been advised to change the gearbox oil with the reline product ($30 per ltr) and this would make it smoother. dont really want a new car and have to replace the box in a few months!! just seeing what other 5spd owners have encountered? also is the Magna/galant 5spd boxes interchangable? im guessing theyd b very similar...perhaps u couldnt use the magna/galant gearsets with the fto diff and crown gear? an interesting thought...t

Mine sounds about the same, going into first is quite stiff, I just assumed it is how the gear box is. *shrug*

you can't swap the gearboxes on the MIVEC with gearboxes from NON-MIVEC cars... there are sensors in there that work with the MIVEC soleniods...

the redline stuff is fantastic and i throughly recommend (and use it)... the manual only takes a 1.5-2 litres so its not like having to fill up my tip which uses 4l @ 30/litre...

syncro's can be replaced however its an expensive process... the redline oil generally helps with syncro issues and you should try that first....

ive always thought changing from 2nd to 1st when stopping would always be difficult....

as for the stiff gear changes, have a look at this, could be something as minor as this...

Redline stuff is great try that first
1st gear is only ment to be for taking off, i know its difficult to accelerate in 2nd gear down low but you really should not be selecting 1st
I am told you can buy kits to rebuild a gear box, and I am currently looking at doing this with mine in the near future, i cannot see why you cannot use a kit from the galant though.
I dont have too much trouble selecting gears. I find that depending on your revs the clutch needs to be engaged a lot more. so i usually shift at around 6k, but when I wanna give it some and shift at 8 i usually get a huge crunch cause i havent put the clutch in enough. however my problem is with the gearbox feeling very squishy, and my syncros do feel a bit out from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd so i will look into doing this in around 6 months time (we will see how the gearbox goes on the track first).
but basically give that redline stuff ago it will definitly improve your gearbox (do it soon instead of later so you do not damage your gearbox more)

i think its to protecthe car, ie like how you cant go from 5th to 6th

if you have rust in the roof... you have two options

1 ..... soft top :D

2 ..... take it to a panel beater and have it repaired / resprayed

I believe that there is only one type of manual box fitted to all models of FTO and the GR box will fit the GPX etc (5M42).

Correct me if I am wrong

It is the same box that is on all manual FTOs but you do get slight differences. I think this is down to if it has LSD, driveshaft diameter (GPX is slightly wider) and the length driveshaft that goes into the gearbox.

I know of at least 5 variations of the manual gearbox :!:
